Finally broke down and ordered one of these from KD. It arrived yesterday and appears to have been redesigned electronically from units previously discussed here.
Should state first, I ordered this light after receiving my ZL 51 and loving everything about it for outdoor applications. Great combination of spot and flood, unbelievable brightness etc, but too much of a spot beam for working indoors up close. Not great for reading either.
I needed a floodlight, but didn't want to spend ZL money for a dated circuit. After spotty reports here, mostly positive, about the Ultrafire, I decided to take a shot. After all, it's $35, not $70...
LOVE THE BEAM! Perfect for close-up work and bright enough for general use. ZL 51 still a much better beam for outdoor walks etc. I like the ramping brightness on the UF, letting me select any level of illumination.
Most important change: This light has memory! Shut it off on low, it comes back on in low, shut off at ANY level, it comes back on at that level. Also has SOS, accessed by double-clicking when on, won't get it by accident.
Construction, frankly seems pretty darned good, threads are nice, has o-ring seal anodizing looks even and the magnet in the tail cap is handy. Had to remove the clip, as it dug into my forehead. Too bad, the clip would be nice, if it could be rotated.
I know some reviewers disliked the past version because it always came on in high mode and would not start dimming for a couple seconds. Thats been remedied with the D iteration of this light and for my intended purpose, its very well designed. (Or should I say copied and improved?)
For $35, it's a great aid for 58 year old eyes in a shop with mediocre lighting and jobs that demand work in dark areas, up close. Might be worth a look from a competent reviewer.
