UPS - What\'s the deal?

So if I go on the UPS site and calculate time from Chelmsford MA 01824 to Salt Lake City UT 84121, I get 5 days for Ground service. So why does it take 10 days instead. I have a package that's on it's way since the 13th - scheduled delivery, the 23rd...???!!!

I'm guessing that the shipper has such deep discounted bulk rates that UPS doesn't ship stuff as fast???? What's the deal?

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

Do you have a tracking number? It would be interesting to use that on the UPS web site to see the history of where the packages have been.

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

Does it actually take 10 days from the time it is shipped until you receive it, or from the time you place the order until you receive it? Is that 10 business days or ten actual days. Is the shipper sending things out right away? It is possible to asign a tracking number to a package, but not ship it right away.

I work at UPS, and it shouldn't take 10 days for ground service from any one point to any other in the lower 48 states. If if is actually taking 10 business days, definitely get your shipping charges refunded by UPS. Every package has a time guarantee on it now, even ground, I believe once you first track the package, you are given a scheduled delivery date. If it arrives later than that date (in your case 5 business days), you are due a refund of shipping charges. Well, actually the shipper is since they paid UPS for shipping, and you just have to hope they are diligent in seeking a refund on your behalf.

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

It shows shipped or billed on the 14th, but it shows the departure scan on the 13th.

Check it out:

I've had packages get "rescheduled" before, but this one flat out gives the delivery date as the 23rd. This package IS traveling over a weekend, but there are scans on both Saturday and Sunday.

I removed the word "consistently" from my original post because I see that my last two shipments actually took 7 days each.

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

Whatever the deal is with the billing dates and departure dates of the 13th and 14th is somewhat confusing, but since the order was sent on a Friday, it will be out over two weekends, so the ten actual days is only six business days. Most of te UPS system is shut down on weekends, although some of the larger hubs (like CACH in Chicago) may have weekend sorts as well (thank God we don't). At UPS shipping days are generally business days, weekends not included.

I occasionally get things shipped from California in five actual days if I place an order early Monday morning, but more often than not it is seven to nine actual days depending if the package is in transit over one or two weekends.

Then again, there are some things that still don't make sense to me after four years of working at UPS.

Notice on my site there is NO choice for UPS... Too many issues...

...and I have issues with businesses that refuse to use UPS, I used them for most of my shipping for years before I worked there, never had a problem (unlike a few experiences with FedEx and USPS, nothing major though).

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

I checked the UPS tracking info for this package. It was picked up on Friday the 13th and it will be delivered 6 business days later on Monday the 23rd. This is standard for how UPS handles Ground Service - weekends and holidays don't count. So your package is scheduled to be delivered 1 day late. I see though that the package arrived in Salt Lake today so it might be delivered tomorrow (Friday).

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

I hear an equal amount of complaints about UPS, USPS, and FedEx, and quite frankly I think that people will pick their favorite of the three. I have no problems with any of the three companies I have mentioned, but it seems other people haven't had the same experience. I am sorry to hear this, but I don't think that any one or two of the three companies is any worse than the others. After all, competition is a good thing, and if any of them really were a bad company, I doubt they would still be in business after so many years.

We offer FedEx Ground... so you have options for tracking.

I can give you 20 examples of UPS screwing us (meridian just this year, and this is only shipments TO me...). including one that cost me 3 hours work to track down a pkg 3 weeks ago. because they screwed up 3 differernt ways... This included me driving and waiting at there location only to go home empty handed. While I was there I chatted with a guard, and joked I bet you guys see lots of unhappy people... he laughed out loud and said that "I had no idea how many....".

Glad it works for you...

Not my idea of service...

Re: UPS - What\'s the deal?

Our bussiness gets every part we order either from UPS or a Truck Lines (Yellow) and I have no complaints what so ever with UPS (Yellow Freight is a WHOLE other story!).

I like USPS when I'm getting stuff. My mailman is one of the great ones!
