Those of you in the Northeast may know that we recently had quite a storm blow through - Here in suburban NY we saw winds of 75mph yesterday and the damage was simply apocalyptic. I have never seen so many trees down in this area, and it seemed like half the roads were blocked or closed due to downed power lines.

In any case, that left some 70,000 homes in the county without power and, of course, mine was one of them. At first, this was fine, but when it became clear that they weren't going to be getting things back on line anytime soon ("five days" is their estimate) I knew I had to move all the food out of the freezer if I wanted to save it.

My mom and my sister came over to help me take it all to their house, but, of course, it was completely dark inside the house and pitch black in the basement where the freezer is. They looked at me (wearing an Energizer 1xAA Cree headlamp) and said "We can't help, we have no lights!"

Well, luckily (or unluckily?) for them, I conjured up a 1xAA Cree XR-E Q5 light out of my pocket for my sister, handed my mother the headlamp, pulled out the Raw NS that was hanging around my neck for myself, (I don't trust them with the good stuff!) and we went to work.

They were awfully impressed with the lights and that I had them on me. I was almost tempted to show them the Raw NS on high, but I was afraid they'd ask what I paid for it!

Lessons I learned:
1. Having more than one light on you can be extremely useful
2. Headlamps are best when you want to carry things
3. Spill is much more important than throw for indoor tasks
4. Flashlights are fun lovecpf

Good job being prepared like you were. Hope your power gets restored soon. Real long outages get old quick. One good thing is you'll now be able to buy lights for your mom and sister, and they'll appreciate it.

good to be prepared man! hope that power gets restored soon. How were you able to post anyway?

Good job!
I used my Solarforce L2 yesterday night. I was working in a hotel when we saw a rat run into the restaurant! Luckily the restaurant was closed for the night, but noone could find the sucker - that is until I got my torch out and looked under one of the sofas... and there were a couple of reflective eyes looking back at me.
45 minutes of manic rat chasing followed, however we were unsuccessful - the rat is still on the loose. :scowl:

I agree with your lessons... spill and headlamps win most of the time for doing real tasks. Pity, cause throwers are so much fun...

Reverse the clip on a AAA, clip it to a baseball cap and instant headlamp!

My Illumina Ti works great like that.

I to lost power form the wind storm. Even two days seems like forever when you have no power, heat or hot water. I was so glad to have some good flashlights here to help get us through.

I happen to work with trees for DPW in my City and was very busy helping to clear downed trees off of the powerlines so that they could be restored. I hope you all have your power back very soon.Hang in there :candle:

Cant wait till the summer gets here, you know what that means right.....Blackouts!!!!

Agreed!

Came home to a dark house on Saturday evening because several utility poles were down in our town from the heavy winds.

Having my EDC in the pocket was helpful to help find the other lights around the house.

The wife prepared dinner (on a gas stove) wearing my headlamp dangling from her neck, (from the head would have been simply too much for her).

A warm white light with diffuser was on the table for general area/table lighting and my other lights were on the table in case any batteries pooped out.

Fortunately/unfortunately the power was restored before bedtime, oh well. At least the hobby gets some appreciation every now and then.

Hope your power was/is restored soon Balefire.
