Using a flash tube to get attention

Guys, I was thinking of hooking up a camera flash unit to a circuit set to flash it every 5 seconds or so and hook it up in the back of the bike. Should be visible for quite a distance and large angles. What do you think?

A bit overkill using a camera flash ?
you could go to a car accessory shop and pick up one of these brake light strobes. Needs 12V though, but you could muck around with some of the resistors to run lower and also the flash frequency. I ran mine a 6V.

It will be a bit to slow... In 4 seconds you may be dead in urban traffic :]

I don't know where you live, but here in the 'States, that would be considered unlawful and the police will be all over you for operating one.

Even a rearward mounted incand bulb is enough to warrant it's a hindrance to drivers by blinding their vision.

If you are covering it with an amber or red lens, that's a different story.
