I should point out, it doesn't have to be LED, but the parameter's I'm gonna lay down almost mandate it.

I'm looking for a small UV light. Must be cheap, and available. I'm not interested in spending $$ on an Arc AAA UV, since, IMHO, technology is advancing in that area, and I could be left with an Edsel.

Any battery source... The smaller the better.

Ya, I know LRI has a Photon that's UV... Great, but a little pricey

You could just buy bare UV LEDs, trim the leads and stick 'em into any old cheap keychain lite - like a gemlite. That's what I did.

Can you recommend a good source?

Well, Aragorn tells me that the Cree UVs are about $40 apiece, so that's outta the question. Craig's site lists a couple of Violets/UVs available from Wilycon (Part no # WUV503-C395-C) at 65 cents (but only for more than 50,000pcs!) and $2.95 for smaller qtys. You'll find the info here: http://ledmuseum.home.att.net/ledvio.htm

Down here in Singapore we can get them violets(not sure what wavelength exactly, but they do work with currency and dayglo items) at about US$1 to US$2 bucks retail apiece, depending on where and how many you actually buy. If you want some, you can also try contacting Aragorn 'cos I'll be sending him a lot of about 20 pcs sometime soon. Dunno if he'll share though... :p

PhilAlex, check out Ebay-they've got 2 different good pen types (around $10.US), and the keyring Squeeze type around 8 bucks.

Thanks, hotfoot-I'll try your suggestions for the loose LEDs

I ordered some of these from Ken Ma (see Craig's website) and got them pretty quickly. They look great! They're right on the border between violet and UV, and work well for both applications.

Oh. Oops. But what was the $40 thingie you mentioned in your email here:

quote:
the uv leds if the price is lower over there than here are a must get- my
cheapest price in usa is $40! each!!!

Is it a fully assembled UV LED keychain lite, or some special grade UV LED - I'm curious if such a thing exists. Maybe Craig knows?

You can buy the 370nm/1mw NSHU590s for $33 in quanties of 9 or less direct from Nichia. Shipping is 7.50 extra. 10 or more and the price drops to $25/pc.

Wilycon sells the 395nm/12mw or 405nm/12mw units with the Cree chips for 2.95 in quantities of 100. $10/pc for small quanties. Shipping extra. Part numbers WUV503-C405-C and WUV503-C395-C. Ken Ma may give you a better deal...

There are a few other die manufacturers of UV parts but none as exciting as 395nm Cree and the 370nm Nichia in my opinion. This will change of course if we wait long enough.

We make Arc-AAA UV's using both parts. Each has their advantages.

I prefer the 395nm unit even though it is longer-UV and produces more visible violet because the part also produces more usable UV than the Nichia (mostly in the form of a wider beam) for typical applications while running much cooler at flashlight power levels.

However if your application demands the shorter wavelength 370nm unit, then we got that too.

Again, if we wait long enough the 100mw LS UV will be out. And then after that, something with more power I am sure...

They're 2.95 for small qty
smile.gif
i forgot what I quote on 100pc
smile.gif
maybe 2.75 if I remember it well.

Anyway, we're in the process of testing the big size UV/Blue/White LED(probably 10mm LED first) with the newest big size LED chips similer to the Nichia 10x and Cree's 1000umx1000um one. However, we'll see if the we see the market of these Super-Ultra-Expensive-and-Bright LED and may have some samples for you guys

Ken, I couldn't find that 395nm/12mw UV on your website.-? (I am in need of a couple of those ASAP)!
-I've emailed you twice about it, but no answer from you??

Would you please email me?
Thanks!

Please state your nick Mr. Glow on the subject and I'll try to get back to you soon.
I'm busy this week and probably will only have time this sat.

I'll surely answer your email this time if you put Mr. Glow on the subject :p

Maybe I just bypassed your emails everytime I check it

You know, sometimes someone will call me whatever I'm doing and I may forgot to reply that email

You had twice luck at this case

I'm guessing these are using Cree's megabright UV dice, like LEDs made by Wilycon and LEDTronics. Cree makes the dice, Bivar packages them into discrete LEDs. That's how it usually works.

I do not agree that they're making it with Cree's chip. Cree do not have anything that make 400nm +/- 10nm and which is probably from other chips supplier. maybe US, maybe korea, and maybe taiwanese. who knows.

To our knowledge, there is no other UV LED on the market capable of producing
500 mcds at 20mA with a stable 400nm wavelength,"

This is the interested part. Since there are no standard of what the term "mcd" means in the world(each manufacturer has its own actually) I do not see the meaning of that statement and they do not provide the compare chart as well.

Received today-for the total sum of $6.99 +$2.50 S+H:
1."clik-it" style UV keyring light (with a single bondwire going to the center of the chip. Craig,-would this be a "Cree" chip LED??

2. an excellent knockoff of the Photon-2 (w/switch), but with a "bluer" white LED than my Photon 2 w/"S" Nichia -nice little Ebay deal.

1. Single bond is crees
smile.gif
either 395/405 +/- 5nm

2. if it appears as more blue, maybe it's 430
