I have a vectorlite 118R that I am thinking of modding it to use a 10watt solarc HID system. What I am trying to decide is what bulb to go with. I could use the bare M10N001-1 lamp or use the M10P002-1 that has a built in parabolic refector with a 6 degree beam spread. I boubt the stock reflector would give me a tight beam but a bare bulb has a slightly higher output. The advatage of the other bulb would be no need to focus due to the built in reflector.
Any ideas? also does any one know a cheaper source for the bulbs? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif
Thanks
The stock bulb in the vector is a 75watt H3 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/knight.gif

Draco, those bicycle light companies like putting those WA bulbs with the reflectors in them. Go thru the internet search and see what they want for replacement bulbs. Some have the 10 watt, some have the 21 watt 6 degree or 13 degree bulbs. The entire units sell for $250 to $350. They have remote bulb holder and ballast/battery. The replacements are in the $65-80 range.

thanks for the info, If I do this I am leaning to the 21watt version as the efficancy of the bulb is better. 10watt is around 500 lumens , 21 watt is about 1850 lumens.
Thet cateye does not seem to have aftermarket bulbs for them atlest thats what is said at their web page, no user serviceble parts. welch allyn has the parts but they seem to be expensive.

I now have enough magnet wire now, I bought 2 spools of wire at the hamvention 24,22 gage I think about 9 pounds each. I know also have a 250 watt short arc xenon bulb with a working powersupply /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif lots of bright light from that!

Draco,

If you already have a maxabeam, please keep us posted on what happens with the 250 watt short arc. Sounds like a REAL MAN'S light. Is that portable at all?

there will be no cooking dragons on the wing! thank you very mutch!
I don't know if this thing can ever be portable due to the powersupply . The ballast puts out around 15.5 volts at a current of around 16 amps. The ballast it's self runs on 110volts ac. the unit it's self was a medical device used with fiber optics. It would provide light for 2 fiber optic cables used for arthroscopic surgery. The ballast is a switch mode type and it's rather large. The bulb is enclosed in a seperate modual with a the starter. It looks like I can use an extention cable with it but I don't have a clue to what to use as a reflector as the bulb seems to need to be operated in a vertical plane.
I will post pics of it hopefully later tonight.

here are the pics of the short arc toy, and NO it's not for roasting my scalie breathern while on the wing. I did not run it with the shield off for safty reasons, did not wish to spend the night picking hot quartz from my scales. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
