How does the PT Impact or Impact II compare to the Versalux MagmaLED for brightness? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The Impact II that I had was brighter than both of my MagmaLEDs, but focused the light to a tight, sharp-edged spot with some rings around it. This gave it better throw, and brighter in that one spot, but did not imho make for as useful a flashlight.

I tried the MagmaLED in a Minimag AA, and it worked pretty well but I could not get a beam that really inspired me (always seemed lopsided). After reading one of Roy's posts I tried it in a AAA mini-mag and really like it. It lives there to this day. I had to shorten the reflector a little to get rid of the dark spot in the middle, but it throws a very nice bit of blueish white light, and makes use of the mag reflector far better than the original bulb did.

The PT Impact I have draws 85 mA with fresh alkalines, and that figures drops rapidly to about 60 mA after one hours. These numbers clearly shows an overdrive for the Nichia single LED, whose max current spec is 30 mA. It is my opinion that PT uses selected LED in their flashlights, but I would not attempt to use lithium AA in the Impact...

So is the Impact/ Impact II OK with rechargeables? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I use my PT Impacts with NiMH. You need to charge batteries every two weeks, even if you don't use the light, because of the high self-discharge rate of NiMH especially in summer. The Led, to my opinion, is driven to factory specs with NiMH.
