Very confused

Hi,

I'm looking at making a basic aspheric Mag (1 x Q2 Cree) but i'm not sure which host to buy and which converter boards to use. I have already ordered a D-size heatsink so it has to be a D now. I had planned to run a 3D with Ni-MH D-cells and a AMC7135 1050mA board from DX but board drops the voltage too much so it doesn't output 1A. I know this from a headlamp I made up with 3AA, it is only running at about 200mA as the batteries are at 3.6v.

Now... My options seem to be a 2D or 3D with a AA 6-9-cell adapter with a Downboy 1000mA, SOB 1000mA or see what happens if I direct drive the LED from the 3 Ni-MH's. What would be recommended? Any other options? Can I run that LED higher than 1A safely? If so, what would you recommend?


Li-ion is not an option.

I got impatient and ordered a 9AA-3D adapter from FM, so it looks like a 3D with a Downboy or SOB. Is one recommended over the other?

The SOB looks to be very similar to the DB, but with thermal protection. I've had a DB1000 die on me, so I'd recommend the SOB.

Does anyone know if you can run a Q2 Cree harder than 1A safely? It will be on a DHS heatsink in a D-size Mag.
