I would get it checked too, especially after 3 days of pain. Your eyesight is too precious to take chances with.

If you DO decide to get it checked out, by all means take the offending light with you.

What, and blind the opthamologist too?

Seriously, get it looked at just to be on the safe side. I accidentally zapped the corner of my eyey with a laser once and it stung, so I made an appointment with my opthamologist right away. It turned out to be ok, but you'll never know for sure unless you get it looked at.

You can't really know what you might have done, not being an eye specialist. There are things that an eye doctor can do, anywhere from topical treatments to the eye, advice to keep it covered for X days, or perhaps even ingested medication. Issues like detached retinas require surgery.

The eye heals INCREDIBLY fast... so whatever healing it could do was already done in a matter of hours after the trauma. Pain lingering for multiple days is not a good sign.

Please. See your eye doctor. Better to be safe and out a $50 co-pay than to suffer an eye issue for the rest of your life.

Tangent -- welder's eye and snow blindness are ultraviolet light burns.
http://www.agingeye.net/visionbasics/uvlightandvision.php

But note (same webpage): "solar retinitis (or photoretinitis) was the result of a photochemical injury mechanism following exposure of the retina to shorter wavelengths in the visible spectrum, i.e., violet and blue light, and not due to thermal burn"

Eek. I didn't know that for sure.

Is that I2d a LED light, or an incandescent/halogen filament light?

You must have pretty sensitive eyes. I've blasted myself with full-power crees a few times, and all that happens is that I see a weird-colored spot in the center of my vision for a few minutes.

But if it's been going on for three days I'd go see a doctor in your place. He'll probably just tell you you're fine, but better safe than sorry, right?

I have an opticians appointment anyway in 2 weeks. Will mention this when I go and see him. Hopefully it'll be nothing.

Thanks guys.

Jarl, an optician is merely an eyewear optics technician. They are not eye doctors. They can neither examine for, diagnose nor treat disorders of the eye. You need to see an optometrist or, preferably (IMHO) an opthamologist. And two weeks is too long to wait, IMHO.

While I Am Not A Doctor, one of the people who followed-up to you earlier has a wife who is. She said "go see an eye doctor."

They're your eyes. It's your life. It's your vision you're gambling with. Only thing I can say is: A fat lot of good your flashlights will do you if you lose your eyesight.

Wow... hopefully your vision will recover. Good Luck!!

I dont know why (I am guilty of this myself), but every person I show my LED lights to HAS to BLAST themselves in the face with it. Even after I warn them not too ???? Its like some ritualized self-induced hazing or something.

Even my 45 lumen nichia torches are too bright to inflict upon oneself in such a fashion.

What the doctor said --- see an opthalmologist, not an optician, for this.

You should be seeing a real eye doctor every few years if you're young, and every year if you're middle aged, to get a glaucoma check at the least. There are a lot of other routine checks that an optician cannot do and won't be able to see in your eyes just measuring you for glasses.

WHEN you inevitably check how full your gas tank is with matches, be sure to mail a letter to the car dealer to ask what to do for the burns.

About 3 days ago I accidentally blasted myself in the left eye with the hotspot from an l2d on turbo, from 6 inches or so (rated 180 lumens, or 3000 lux at 1 metre). This lasted about as long as it took me to move my head and light in opposite directions, but my eye is really sore, and i'm a bit worried since it's been going on for so long. It feels similar to mild eye strain, but that doesn't last 1 day, let alone 3.... Anyone done anything similar?

Hey,

I now see why they took ya'll's B-B Guns away over in England:crackup: (Man, I crack myself up sometimes)

You think a flashlight hurts your eye  You ought to take one point blank in the peeper from a Daisy Red Ryder Range Model Carbine, THEN you will know REAL eye pain  my friend. Its fun & games until someone gets hurt...

Jarl, if I may be so bold: ISTM you have only one pair of eyes. ISTM an eye being sore for three days is cause for concern. ISTM it would make far more sense to consult an opthamologist, who specializes in eye care, than a bunch of anonymous flashlight geeks on an Internet web forum.

"ISTM" ?
