After owning my VIP prototype in plain aluminum(no finish to rub off and in fact a few in and outs of a sheath or pocket, it would likely get shinier) I am amazed that Charlie came up with a machined piece of such high quality. I am assuming that usually there is some kind of learning curve to make something like this and usually one can't plan and engineer every detail and execute all of them on the first try. I'm not discussing the light at this moment because it speaks for itself and absolutely no one will be disappointed. All of the threads are of perfect size and fit to give confidence to taking off the head and tail without having to worry if it will go back together without stripping the threads which was a concern with the excellent designed firefly. The firefly is a great light but I believe without a doubt this sets a new standard against any light! I didn't meant to imply that Charlie shouldn't have been able to pull this off, it's just that he did and to such a standard is really amazing.

Even the selection of the o rings and how each piece tightens to each body part while making contact of the o ring is an absolute joy. I find myself using the lower setting more than I thought I would because it gives one the feeling of absolute power knowing the extra light capabilities are right at hand. Interestingly the amount of light produced at the lowest setting when directed at close up objects is actually quite bright and not similar to any just small light like the arc aaa, cmg infinity, led lenser or any other small single aa light that I am familiar with. In a dark forest one could actually use the low setting to navigate a trail. That is my impression although I haven't been in the woods with this light.

Using this light at the lowest setting when looking at things up close is more than adequate and the color is the most impressive thing. Most low power led's are different shades of blue, mostly, but not this light. The simplicity of the positional switch is really a stroke of genius, no fumbling, no suprises, no guesswork at what setting the light will start with. The quality of the switch itself is interesting because it seemed like it would be the week link, but not this switch. Because it protrudes slightly I was worried that it might easily be damaged but it feels massive for its tiny size. I was even concerned that the only way to carry this light would be in a sheath, but actually it fits quite nicely in a pocket without a clip. My only concern will be to carry it in a pocket with only a leather item, like a leather key case or leather coin purse.

I gave some rough lux measurements in the VIP thread and I believe it was 1200 lux at hight 690 on medium and 10 or so on the lowest setting but I believe I will have to take the lowest setting again with the times X turned off. The measurements were taken off of a battery that had been used for a few minutes and not brand fresh. Now compared to my Super Baby Pin which used a special led, so I believe, which came out with a lux of 820 or marginally more than the MEDIUM setting of this light. The thing I can't comment on enough is the feeling of having such a versatile light, in effect having virtually 3 lights in one. I can envision someone having a custome sheath made with possibly a secret compartment in the bottom to house one or two extra battries, what a feeling of power that would be.

I said a bit more than I had planned on saying, but for some reason this light makes one feel as if they should wax eloquent and try to convey with words that which is more of a feeling than anything else. If it was just a piece of hardware, my task would have been easier, and I believe Charlie has something here which would best be described as

I wholeheartedly agree.

it seems as if I'm on the road to owning almost all custom made lights, VIP's, firefly's,Blasters,McLux's, TNC splash, etc, oh boy what fun.

Heck- I've been saying that all along ...and I haven't even received mine yet. You used words very very well I believe. I'm sure more poetry will emerge as more people get thiers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I have to chime in here.

I have had the opportunity to play with one of these lights. All I can say is, "WOW." I've built many single cell lights using constant current converters and none have been able to equal the performance of a modded KL4 running on two cells. My personal modded KL4 has a Q3J running at about an amp in it.

When I got the VIP, I compared it too my KL4. My first impression was that I like the KL4 better. I'm just not crazy about optics; however, once I dropped a reflector into the VIP, to even the playing field, things changed. I really couldn't see a difference in the brightness of the beams. Some may say, "big deal," but it is a big deal.

Charlie has found a way to get two cell light performance out of a single cell light and has mass produced it, to an extent.

The point is, THIS THING IS BRIGHT. The variable brightness was just a perk to me. I would imagine that it would come in handy though.

All I can say at this point is that THERE'S MAGIC IN THAT LIGHT. The build also speaks for itself. There's nothing that feels cheap about the light. Everything is very smooth and operates the way it should.

It is only as bright a a Q3J bin that is overdriven?

Only?

You have to remember a couple of things. First, the VIP is running on a single cell. To date, I have yet to get more than about 600mA to the lux in a single cell light. This VIP that I have looks to be running at about 1A. The second thing is that the brightness, or lux factor is largely dependent upon the size of the reflector. The S017XA is a much smaller reflector than that of the KL4. This reflector, the S017XA is killer.

The last factor, that I should have mentioned, is that this is a very special Q3J. What I mean by this is that it is the brightest single die luxeon that I've ever seen, bar none. I really lucked out with this one. It's the reason that I keep it in my personal light. I should also have mentioned that my modded KL4 actually runs closer to 1.2A.

Make no mistake, the VIP is a very bright light. I doubt that there's another single cell light, that is of like size, on the planet that is as bright. I can only imagine what it will do with the turbo head.

I very much would like to see the VIP runtimes with various brands of CR123 batteries before mine arrives. Has this been discussed yet in one of the VIP threads? Particularly on high mode, I'm curious. I know with the Arc4, there seem to be quite a bit of differences in runtimes between the different cells while on it's highest mode. I just bought a 20 pack of Sanyo batteries and wonder if they will cut the mustard before possibly buying more.

the VIP prototype that I have is absolutely amazing in how much light it puts out for a single cell. It puts out more light than my bright 5 watt 6 volt L4. I think people are going to be suprised by this light, with a single 3 volt battery.

mr bulks light put other lights to shame no matter how many times i used my baby pin or ragmag im always shocked. they make ya love the dark.cause ya can see how far thease babys shine.and the beam color is always perfect

Do you usually feed it from the rear or the front(battery wise)? And does it flicker when you change the brightness while it's on?

One slight clarification on *flicker*. The dimmer switch is known as a "break before make" design, meaning it will actually go wide open ("break" contact therefore bypassing the dimming circuitry) momentarily before it will engage the next dimming step ("make" contact) and due to manufacturing tolerances if one is able to turn the switch slowly enough one can get it to "flash" very briefly to High, but this is difficult to do and one cannot make it happen if turning the switch at a normal rate. If a microsecond of flicker is not acceptable for the application at hand, simply turn off the light, change the brightness, and turn back on. Of course one night when you are patient and have a lot of free time...
