I purchased protected 18650s and after running them down in my U2 to the point where rotating the bezel doesn't change the output, but not to the point where all light has ceased, drains the batts to 2.6 volts?

I thought protected cells are supposed to cut off the current when the voltage drops below 3V ?

It's bad to run Li-ions below 3V. Am I killing my cells?

You have other problems also! The U2 is supposed to cutoff around 3.1-3.2V, mine does! Not sure about your cell though.

the cutoff on some protection curcuits is at about 2.4V, you almost made it.
but you really dont want to make it. they say its pretty low.

as you might know depending on the Load at the time of cutoff, and how long the battery rests afterwards, the battery will show more or less voltage.
depending on the load, a 2.4V cutoff will work after the cell is mostly depleated.
a LIGHT load, it will get lower than a high load, because the battery voltage doesnt get pulled down so hard/fast.

You don't need to use protected cells in a U2 as it has its own protection circuit!
