Now that I got rid of my Carley reflector questions I could also ask about some Wellch Allyn bulbs and sockets.

One bulb I am partially interested in is the WA01185, some people know that one. In the datasheet it is listed under "2 pin style" and "base H" design. Now how do I find the correct counterpart/socket to use this bulb? How does a "potted" bulb look like? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

TIA,

Klaus.

Klaus,

The WA01185 is a standard G4 type bipin base. 4mm pin spacing, 0.7mm wire diameter. Any "G4" bipin socket will fit it. For example, WA offer the ceramic sockets #C-920502 and C-920504 series of sockets.

A potted bulb is simply the bipin bulb placed into a standard "PR" or flashlight bulb base, wires soldered to the nipple and metal body and filled with ceramic adhesive. It allows one to then use the bulb in any torch that uses a "regular" flashlight bulb.

Ahh, so the G4 bipin base is the same as the ones used with MR16 bulbs?
I have taken a look at the C-920502 and C-920504 sockets, why is the socket around 26mm big while the wires are 4mm and the whole glass body only around 8mm? How does one decide which one to take? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

Are PR-pottet bulbs these like the Maglite bulbs?

TIA,

No. MR-16 pins are 1.0mm in diameter. They will not readily fit in a G4-PR base adapter or G4 socket. MR-16 sockets are available as well although I am not acquainted with WA's offerings in this area. A number of other manufacturers also make MR-16 sockets. Gilway Lamps, for example.

The sockets differ in the arrangement of the lead wires coming out of the socket body and shape. For example, the 04 series have sqaure bodies and the lead wires coming out the side with the pin receiving sockets near one edge of the body. The 02 series have a circular body with the pin sockets dead center. Also, the lead wires are out the back. The 02 is the nicer design for tubular form torches. For other, larger installations, the 04 series may be better.

Potted bulbs are like the Mag bulbs you can buy at the store.

Yes. But you don't necessarily have to use a PR adapter. You can actually bend one of the pins to contact the side of the lamp holder on the inside (battery negative) and allow the other pin to contact the spring loaded bulb contact plunger (battery positive). This is the quick and easy way.
