Thought i would just check the LED so put the bench supply on it an got nothing at 750ma 3.5v.
So unsure if its the Led and the driver or just the LED, how can i test the driver without ripping it to bits so i can send it back?

I'm not sure I have the patience for this light modding thing...order something and wait a month...not right...order something else...another month!
Were you going to completely mod the W200? If so what's the problem? I guess you were counting on the driver?

Absolutley....
But good news i just briefly touched an xpg with some fly leads to the positive and negative of the exsisting dead LED and it lit up, so the driver is OK.
On with mods, straight away then.....:crackup:Starting right now!

There is no driver, no resistor, nothing!! Its just a blank board.
So how is an XPG going to cope with 4.5V?

How do i get the negative outer ring of the driver in contact with aluminium heat sink? As i cant see how they have done ir before it was in pieces.....:laughing:

I didn't dismantle the 'driver' yet, but as far as I can see there is a little soldering involved.
I think they just put some thin in it and heat it with a soldering iron so it makes contact with the side and the - of the driver.

No cant be that as it literally just pushes out, there is a little brass tab sticking out of the pill inside but its the wrong side of the driver to do anything, so think im going to have to drill a whole in the dx driver when it turns up then pass the wire through the front and some how solder it to this tab but it will be almost impossible to get to it just through the small slit in the top of the heat sink
Whatever happens its no going to be returned now as its in about 8 pieces....:D

If you have any resistors lying around you could just add one so that you could at least try out the XPG.
By the way, how do you get the pill out? Is it glued, soldered, what? Mine doesn't just lift out.

The only thing holding it in is an O'ring press fitted around the body of the pill just give it a good pull from the back of the head.
No resitors of the right value and ive no realised im out of wire too.
What wire guage should i be using the stuff that was on there was very flexible and very thin and silver in color?

Mudman CJ will ship you some teflon wire that will spoil you from ever using anything else again. 26guage is ok for this, heck even 28 guage won't matter much at these drive levels.
Don't hit an xpg with 3 eneloops (mine auditioned the angry blue but I was quick with the twist off).
I tried an r2 and didn't notice a difference. I've got the stock P4 in there DD by 3 eneloops, its definately decent but very uncool and I don't win any points for it. I would like to try one of the top binned K2 tffc's from Fred as he gets excellent colour bins usually and the K2 is so durable it'll make a very robust light.
There is a very decent 5md 14mm DX driver, http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10084
it looks funny. You'll need to pot it if your using 3 cells, but I've used it for a bit in a headlamp with 3s AA and it got angry (it makes noise, its funny) but worked well. I moved it to a modified bike light driving a Q5 off 2 alk C and its done very well. Anyway its $2 so try it!

Can you squeeze one of these XP-G dropins in the head?

Not with out a bit of work. But yes its doable. I know cause I do it on my XR-E and XP-G mods. I have even used that pill on MC-E builds. Just the pill mind you not the driver.
