Wow! Bar-b-q chips indeed. Thanks for sharing that, Black Rose. I'm fortunate thao my Thermaltakes aren't that model, but now I'm wary of their designs in general. It looks like there was a small fire and explosion in the PS. IMO that hints that they're not derating their components enough in terms of voltage and thermal stress.
I was getting ready for work when it happened. It sounded like fire crackers going off.

I had no idea whether the motherboard or any peripherals were damaged until I put a new PSU in that evening. Luckily no damage other than the PSU.

I took the power supply apart to see what went poof. Antec wouldn't provide any warranty support since I took it apart, but with the research I did after that happened, I wouldn't get another Antec PSU anyway.

That looks awfully familiar! That was the result of a nearby lightning hit. The EMP traveled down a serial cable and detonated the first chip that it encountered, which was that 1488 RS232-->TTL level shifter on a mux board.

Those 1488/1489 chips are like fuses, btw. Look at them crosseyed and they blow, although usually not that violently!

yeah it wasn't my computer...all the burns I could have seen I wouldn't need a high magnification photography as that pic depicts:laughing:

I don't have the old PSU anymore.

Once Antec support told me to PFO, I tossed it.

Here are links to two of the pictures I took of the PSU:

I forgot to update this about a month ago when I cleaned out my computer. Guess what I found, you guessed it, one bulged cap on the mainboard. Next weekend I will be rebuilding the system and that worry will be gone. By the way there were no odd crashes from that point in time. This is going to be a MAJOR (SOOPPER DOOPER as the LED Museum would say) Upgrade. I will give you one teaser, a QUAD Core processor.
