What about this step past a ROP Mag? 64623?

I have a 6D mag converted to ROP (aluminum reflector, glass lens, 3854-L bulb, and 6 D alkalines). The next step was going to be to get 6 NiMH D batteries and use the 3854-H bulb. A little looking at CPF and....I think I want something bigger...

A bin pi socket with 64623 bulb and twelve (12) 1/2 D NiMH batteries in the 6D tube, (like these http://www.batteryjunction.com/0-5-d-cell.html) seems like it would work. That would be ~15 volts fully charged and should give about 5000 lumens according to this http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=179748 and http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h75/pike444/bulbs/64623.jpg

Two questions.

1 - Can the 12 * 1/2 D batteries sustain 10 amps? They are listed as 3.5A max discharge
2 - Are there any problems I am missing in this setup?

@100W will make a Tjernobyl of the switch/lampstem :huh:
The switch will handle 8-9A for wery few cycles, and the heat will melt the plastic in short order.

Make a search om mag623 and read how it's done without reinventing the deep plate again ;)

I was planning on using the kiu bi-pin socket (or one of the other pwm regulated switchs available here) so that things won't melt. I am mostly questioning the battery setup.

First problem is you are wrong about your cell count.
1/2D cells are a little bit longer then a 1/2D size, You can only fit 5 in a 3D space. I know this, I have a 5 pack of those cells I run in a 3D mag with 6volt bulbs. So, you'll only be able to fit 10 of them.

This setup will grossly underdrive the 623 making it somewhat lame.
You'll likely get a more pleasant and whiter light, and ALOT more runtime going with the 3854-H and 6 Nimh D's. I also have a 6D Rop.

If you haven't tried a ROP High yet, I would highly suggest it before stepping all the way up to 623. you get a pretty kicking light that'll run for a good 3 hours.

If you really want to go all out with your 6D there are better options.

Thanks for pointing out the length of the 1/2D issue.

I will do the ROP-H first, but it looks like the investment in D NiMH batteries is a dead end for a brighter light? Are the brighter 6D options that use the D NiMH Batteries?

I guess that is OK. A new 6D MagLite host is not really the expensive part is it...
