What are the rings in Gen3 KL3 lenses for?

I got a new KL3 yesterday and it has the rings in the lens surface. What do they do to the light beam? Diffuse? Lessen throw? Improve throw? Just wondering.

it creates a more diffuse beam than the smooth one

the kl3 is designed for throw, why did they screw with it?:scowl:

Thats what I thought. Like a dummy I let my older one get away from me. The Gen2 was the three watt with the smooth "fisheye" (my term, may not be correct) lens. Does anyone know who could mod the KL3 and replace the ringed lens with one of the older smooth "fisheye" looking lens?

I may be mistaken but I believe it is a Fresnel lens.

It has rings, but it doesn't look like a true Fresnel.
