I am looking for several pocket sized LED flashlights as gifts. I want the following features:

. Under $35-$40
. uses a single CR123A 3V battery
. has at least 2 modes - hi and lo
. has clicky switch located on the tail
. has clip for pocket or belt - I holster is not good enough.

I have a SureFire e1B (Backup) (80 lumens) for myself and I am looking for something similar only affordable to give several as gifts.

If such a thing exists, where can I buy it?

Thanks

You're not going to find a light in that dollar range with all those features. Rather than giving you a host of different options, I would suggest that you look at Dealextreme.com and browse there. They have some decent lights there that won't break the bank and some of the lights will have most of the features that you're looking for. Finding a two mode is going to be the hardest. If I recall, they only have one or two dual mode lights and they both use 2 cr123 batteries. Happy Hunting!

Good suggestion from DCP but I would caution the OP ordering from DealExtreme for Christmas gifts is a timing risk. My two orders from there, and widely commented here on the boards, is took a month to come in.

I have had good success with DealExtreme I just don't hav ethe patience.

I suggest against CR123s for gift flashlights. 1xAA or 2xAA lights are more appropriate. Something that can actually run decently on alkaline is even better.

I suggest the Fenix E2O, even though it's way far away from your requirements list...

Something a little closer to the requirements list, something I have gifted before with good response: The LumaPower LM301 (now called the LM31 IIRC). It's a decent little 2 mode 1xAA. If you must have CR123s, then the LM33 fits the bill minus the clip.

Unfortunately, all of the flashlights I can think of that meet the requirements laid forth, come in at a much higher price point.

+1 For avoiding CR123a powered lights, go for something people can actually afford to feed!

Thanks mdocod that LM-301 sounds sweet! now I guess I NEED one!

You can get THIS for less than $35. Works a treat on RCR123s (3.7v)

I own one and if it had a memory mode instead of skipping to the next mode each time i turned it off and on, it would be perfect for me. It's way bright!

The LM33 is on sale at Battery Junction:

http://www.batteryjunction.com/

I have the LM31(AA version) and it is a nice light unfortunately it seems to be out of stock everywhere.Apparently the LM33 is not as efficient as the LM31 and its' runtime on low is much less.At $24.95 the LM33 seems like pretty good deal though, I'm guessing they will sell fast at this price.

The direct link wasn't working, just go to the CREE store and then the Lumapower section.

50% more than your price budget, but the Eagletac P10C is one hell of a light. And you get the CPF discount. Reliable, easy to change dual-modes, built to last, nice clip, and now they have cren bezels available. I rotate between a T10C and P10C, although the P10C only comes out when I need a slimmer profile like for dress pants.

Fenix P2D with 'CLEAR15' code comes to $41.45 shipped. Doesn't have a clip, but I think it's the best you can do on your budget.

You might want to look at the Romisen RC-N3 Q5 from ShiningBeam.com. You can use either 2xAA's or, 1xCR123. This is a really bright, well made light. Do a search on youtube for a review of this light.

I'd use AA batteries for most normal flashlight users. You'll also have to drop one of the requirements for a light that fits in your price range.

You can check shiningbeam for good lights at around that price range. The RC-N3 is a good light but is single mode.

:welcome:

Thanks Guys,

I finally decided on a Romisen RC-N3 from Deal Extreme for a about $16 dollars. It has everything I was looking for except a low mode (sigh), albeit at half my strike price. With a low mode, it would be a poor mans E1B killer at that price.

It says it comes with an "Cree XR-E LED emitter" - Will I be disappointed that I didn't buy the Q5? Hint: brighter is better.

Given the timing, I gave up on this as a gift and instead, I decided to buy just one in order to evaluate it. If it meets expectations, I'll give them as gifts for some other occasion.

I still have a lot to learn, the LM33 is also a nice looking light and very tempting at $25 - alas, no clip.

What's a "reverse" clicky switch? How does it differ from a 'normal' tail click on, click off switch?

Shining Beam has Romisen RC-N3 Q5's for $24.25 plus you could use the 6% off code - CPFuser. I don't know if they would make it to you in time for Christmas but at least you know they'll be working when they do arrive unlike hit or miss DX.
