OK, this is what I want: a bright and piercing emergency light (small is OK as long as it's piercing!), 360 degree view, flashes SOS constantly (also option for steady on), pocketable (or at least butt-packable), magnet in the base, at least 24 hour run time, lanyard loop, belt clip, fluorescent orange, common battery type (preferably lithium), maybe I'll think of some more later!

Any suggestions, please??
Thanks.

Eternalight(sp) has just what you need. I have the Marine mdl which is marine yellow, floats, does sos, strobe and various degrees of brightness.

Thanks, Roy. I've looked at that, but I'm thinking more of incandescent brightness levels if possible.

If you really want something bright, I'd consider a real strobe, that being one with a Xenon flashtube.

One of the nicest is the ACR model made as a military survival strobe. Runs on 2AA batteries, waterproof, probably the most rugged strobe made. No magnet, though. It's a white strobe, and comes with blue directional and IR omnidirectional filters. (It really is made for the shot-down pilot. Blue is so they can point it to a rescuing aircraft, without the aircraft confusing the signal with ground fire.)

Anyway, they have them here, search for ACR:

Also, Tektite makes several different strobes meant for scuba divers as locators. I have the tiny one that runs on one AA battery. It has a yellow lens, and isn't as bright as the ACR, but Tektite makes some C cell units that would be. You can get from these guys:

Both flash about once every second or so. That's pretty standard for a distress strobe.

Do I need either of these? No. Are they fun? Yes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hello sotto,

You also might want to check out the various marine supply stores such as

West Marine

Marine strobes usually flash at around 1 second intervals, but they have the 360 degree visibility and brightness you are looking for. Strobe lights do not allow constant on, however some of them have a constant on light built in as well. I am not sure if any of them have magnets, but that is what super glue is for.

Thanks for the suggestions, fellow CPF-ers, however my major requirement is flashing SOS, not just flashing.

Also, I checked into the Visi-Flares recently, and a company rep said they did not currently have any of the ones I asked about available. He said they "had to make some more" and they'd be available sometime in the future. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes2.gif
