Does anyone know anything about this battery? Can it be used in a flashlight, maybe stacked to replace a cr123?

There is a guy on another of my forums that says he has a bunch of surplus. He'll send a box of 200 of them for pretty much free. After reciept of the batteries, he asks to be reimbursed the approx $10 postage. It sounds great, but I don't know if I have anything that can use them.....or if anything can be modified to use them. Or, does anyone know of a cool led light that uses them?

Thoughts?

Hi kingofwylietx.

I remember something about this chemistry cell from a while back. I ran into some cylindrical cells at a military surplus store. Not sure what they were for, it might have been night vision, don't really know, as they were just cells in a box of like 25 or something. At the time I asked around and, as I remember, I was told these cells had the potential to explode unexpectedly and vent toxic gases, so I passed on them.

Sorry I'm not much help, that's all I can remember. It was some time ago.

These are for night vision devices. I was hoping there was a flashlight where I could employ them.

Hmmmmm.......'potential to explode unexpectedly and vent toxic gases'.....I guess I'll pass on them too.

Too bad, they were free.

I looked at the specs for the batteries you linked to and they show a diameter of 1.03" which is about 26mm. I don't think you can bore a 6P out enough to use these cells. Maybe stacking three of these to replace one C cell or six to replace two C cells, etc.

... I was told these cells had the potential to explode unexpectedly and vent toxic gases, so I passed on them.

Both of these are possible failure modes. However, the few companies that manufacture these for the military are quite good at making these, and failures are rare.

That being said, you really have no idea as to the condition of the cells, their storage history, potential abuse and mishandling, etc... If it were me, I would run away from these. They are not worth the risk.

Cheers,
Battery Guy

Even when fresh and new, I think this kind of cell is designed for ultra-long life, low drain applications. It is not a substitute for a more common kind of battery.
