Hi I am looking for a led type flashlight I previously had a maglite 2d for years with an ordinary bulb but this is very poor compaired with the led type torches I've seen.
I am ideallly looking for an aluminium body and durable excellent spot and flood and high lumen output with a good battery life ideally, and water resistant, and value for money the budget at a streatch is 90 dollars.
Hope one of you can help with suggestion as you have expertise in this area and quite honestly I havent a clue so will be guided by you suggestions. look forward to hearing you comments .Thanks
 
You have to first start figuring out what you really want. There is a checklist somewhere, but basically decide what kind of batteries you want to use, what you will be using it for if you want multiple modes, strobe etc.

You mentioned that you are used to a mag 2D so you should definitely checkout malkoff devices where they have a ton of amazing maglite dropins that can work in the light you already have.

You should also check out some of the major flashlight websites such as foursevens.com, fenix-store.com, and shiningbeam.com. Also Batteryjunction. These sites will also help you get a better idea of what you want.

if you only want one light and don't want to get into a lot of complicated decisions go to 4sevens and get a quark aa or aa2, some eneloops, or similar, and a charger, and you're done.
however, if you get sucked into the madness you'll end up with many lights. if that's the case i'd start off by ordering a solarforce l2 host, some 18650 batteries, a charger, and 2 drop-ins- one an xp-g r5 and the other an xp-e r2. one is floody and the other's a thrower. guaranteed hours of fun:party:

Both are 300 actual out the front lumens. The P20 is $64, and the T20 is $84.

The P20C2 Mk II is my fav of all my lights - its a steal for the price, and it has awesome flood with decent throw.

The T20C2 Mk II is one of the furthest throwing lights in its class, and it's very nice and built sturdy. I have mine mounted on one of my rifles, actually.

I read the forum for 2 months and read review after review, and anything neg I could find as well - adding this brand, deleting this brand, etc...

That's when I tried the P20C2 Mk II. I now have 4 different Eagletac lights. Great quality.

I too have a regular and LED maglight. Either of these blow the maglight out of the water.
 
Regardless of which route you travel I think it would be good if you set your sights on a fairly small easy to pocket light. The so-called Every Day Carry (EDC) small format light is incredibly useful. If you do get sucked into the flashlight collecting vortex that first EDC light will still be useful to you as a backup to something else you may later buy.

I'm going to suggest as a first light any of the modern single AA cell flash lights. All of them will outperform your Maglite 2D in both output and equivalent output run time by a huge margin. AA cells are common and primaries (non rechargables) are cheap, cheap, cheap.

I would suggest you select from lights known to deliver both lots of output and good run times on common alkaline cells as well as good quality rechargable cells such as Sanyo Eneloops or their Duracell equivalent. Not all lights are equal in this department, as it turns out that good quality rechargeables can deliver sustained higher rates of current to a light. Some manufacturers have taken more care to ensure their offerings run very well on both.

Such lights are typically available in the range of $50 - 70 USD. The Fenix LD10 R4 and not quite yet shipping Zebralight SC51 are two single AA light examples displaying state of the art power management - fantastic output and long runtimes. The Quark AA noted above is also a great light.

Why care about regular off the shelf alkalines as well as rechargeable cells? Even if you aren't into rechargeable cells at present, it may pay to keep your options open.

If you are like most of us, having a tiny pocketable light that delivers tons of light means you'll find many more opportunities to use it. Maybe you'll find new uses for a flashlight light you never expected. Or maybe having rechargeable cells on hand will encourage you to use the light more.

Some like to walk at night with a light on, others use them throughout the day or night for work. I use one of my flashlights as my primary bike light so naturally I chew through batteries more quickly than say someone who pulls out a flashlight once in a while for short durations - their cells will last many months before recharging or replacing while I typically drain a cell a day when I'm riding at night. Rechargeable cells therefore make the most sense for me, as my long term cost of use is pennies per charge per cell. Rechargeable cells also are not prone to leakage whereas alkaline cells can leak over the long run and ruin whatever device they are installed in.

By selecting a light that will work well with both non-rechargables and rechargable cells, you've future proofed this first purchase of yours.

+1 on starting with an EDC light first.
I have been using my Jetbeam Jet-I Pro V.3 as my EDC since i got it. 1xAA, 2-way clip for clipping to hat and using for a headlamp, 3 modes you can set to whatever you like and is $56 with your CPF discount!!!
I like my Quark too!.
Just get ready to spend your whole paycheck on lights, its a bad addiction, but a fun one too!

You can upgrade your maglite too, Electrolumens makes some real cool options for a maglite.
I prefer the EDC size of light. Fenix PD30 is a real handy size. Surefire and Solarforce are cool because there upgradeable
 
So many choices, and only so many pockets to fill ;)

I have four flashlights in my coat and then one in a belt holster.

Zebralight H51.

A head light that works well as a hand held. (head lights are the most versatile flashlights) It has a great low and plenty of lumens on high. You don't need brighter no matter what you think you need...Big lights suck.

Good luck on your LED flashlight hunt. Take your time, study the forums, look for good buys over on the markeplace.

Just put the Showerhead dropin into the Mag 2D ... It really does just drop in ... You can use two D cells but the output will only be 400 lumens.

You can convert the 2D to take either six AA's or two 18650's for a higher output.

This is a cheap mod and you will not be throwing away your old 2D Maglite.

After that , please yourself which LED torch to go for ... I went for Solarforce L2's and L2i's plus ITP torches ... Very cost-effective.
