Whatever happened to the 9P?

Just downloaded the Sure Fire 2001 catalog. I noticed the 9P was missing. Have they discontinued this model?

People don't seem to mention the 9P much here. Is that because the size is awkward? Not small enough for truly easy carry and concealment, not big enough for... umm, whatever.

But the 105 lumens @ 60 mins for 3 batteries seems a good performance compromise to me.

I have the 9Z (the combat version of the 9P), and it's almost too much light (Gasp! Did I just blaspheme?

) for a pocket light. And while, technically speaking, it does fit in my pants pocket, it makes it a tad tough to sit down without being careful.

I think that the 9P was getting lost in the shuffle due to all the new SureFire lights that have been recently released. I think that the relase of the M3, and to a lesser extent the D3, started the 9P on the track to extinction.

The 9P was one of the first of the current high power flashlight generation; how 'bout a moment of silence for one of the true originals in the industry

I've had the 9P for about 18 months and even though the new models are here I'm still happy with it. It is ultra bright. My girlfriend has been saying its too heavy, so I got her an E1. If she says thats too heavy I'll gladly use it for her

. Hoping to get an E2 soon.

Even as a new Flashaholic, that's sad news. If the 9P is now discontinued, isn't there still going to be available a smaller Sure-Fire that converts via 1 or 2 adapters to a 9P ?

How much does adding these adapters affect a Sure-Fires water-resistance and structural strength ?
And I can't work out which end cap is waterproof, and which is fully water resistant.

I Would really appreciate some advices on the decisions I have to make.

( I'm giving too much away to Tim Fl*n*g*n here - so much for tough negotiating ! )

The D3 is still in production. The only differnce that I know of is the D3 has a clip which can be removed if you don't want it. I beleive it also comes standard with a lockout tailcap. I suppose it does cost a bit more though.

I believe that the D3 is just the 9P with a pocket clip, lockout tailcap, and a new name. The picture of the D3 looks to me identical to the 9P, but with the clip.

The locking tailcaps are the ones that are waterproof. I think that it's the Z-41 and can be added to the older lights, the 6P/Z and 9P/Z.

Well, the 9P is back at least as of the 2006 catalog. I've been wanting one with the Z59 clicky tailcap and the P91 H/O lamp. I'll need an extra lamp and a SC1 spares carrier too. Gotta save up the box tops a little while longer....:(

As for batteries, I've found some RCR123A Li-Ion cells that appear to be just the solution to charging. The ones I found are rated 3.0V, not 3.7, and shouldn't burn out the P91 lamp when used in hi-output setups. The chargers, though, only handle two cells at a time, but are better than nothing, and one particular charger is switchable between 3.0 and 3.7 volts.

Given the benefits of super-power output with a SF 9P, I wouldn't want anything less. :twothumbs

:) This thread is 6-7 years old..

BTW Welcome to CPF

Seems to have made a comeback, just like the 9P :nana:

HauseMan - glad you are enjoying your new 9P, I hope it provides many years of reliable service.

dont bother with those 3v rcr123's they cant provide the current for a p91, check on here there are hundreds of threads on this aswell as other combinations...

Do you self a favour and ditch the 3.0 v RCR123s. They are not good. About three years ago I got a 9P and got some 3v RCRs, thinking just like you. They did not last long at all, I was lucky not to have more serious problems.

The capacity of them is not sufficient to get any decent run time, 1.2 amps from the P90 is approaching, or even exceeding the current limit of those cells. The P91 is running them at nearly 4C! (4 x their rated capacity). Li-ions shouldn't be discharged at a rate faster than 2C (twice their rated capacity). Using 3 in series is asking for trouble as they have a tendency to over drain one cell excessively, this is dangerous, and can lead to a violent venting with flame in Li-ions. This makes your little 9P into a potential pipe bomb.

Get yourself 2 of AWs protected 17500 cells, then all will be well with your 9P.
