When to use charger\'s discharge feature?

My new Vanson charger has a discharge feature. When should this be used? Is it a beneficial feature? I'm a bit confused because so many people use the word discharge when they mean running the battery down while in a light, not a feature such as this.

Hello Phaserburn,

I use the discharge function on my Vanson when charging NiCd cells and for the initial forming of NiMh cells.

I also will be using it to prepare cells for the charger comparison I am working on.

Found the answer to my question in another string.

Yup, for once, the Maha's automatic discharge-then-recharge function is coming in very useful for breaking in new NiMHs. What I did was pop the large 4500mAH NiMH C's onto the charger, leave for work - let them discharge, and automatically recharge. By the time I get home (you can tell it's a long day if the Maha has time to do all that), one cycle has been completed and the cells have been refilled - just in time for me to pop them into the light.
