I am new to the board and I have been searching for this LED panel. Maybe someone can help. Here is a picture of it and in this casing it is actually two panels. Thanks for any help.

They are custom "homemade" panels designed by someone on a boating website for his underwater light business. It is a simple 5mm and resistor circuit, no driver.

You would be much better off with some high power LEDs as those lights do not have the punch it takes to go through water.

I see you used the picture from his website, so either you know where to get them already or are trying to copy a design not worth copying............ ???

Email if you really want his site address.

Why bother with arrays of low powered LEDs?

I count 168 LEDs. Using the top-of-the-line Nichia GS LEDs, driven at the maximum 30mA, would be approximately 10 * 168 = 1680 lumens of blue light, with a total power consumption of about 20 watts. That would cost about $100 (Nichia GS LEDs are expensive), not including the labor to solder the LEDs.

Using cheaper LEDs, you could get about 500-1000 lumens. However, lifetime would be very low at 30mA, in the low hundreds of hours.

A single top bin (WN) SST-90 driven at 6A (approximately 22W) can output over 1600 lumens. Last time I checked, a WN bin SST-90 mounted a star (a board used to hold power LEDs) costs $54 shipped on Avnet. Even with optics and a heatsink, it is still much cheaper than the Nichia GS solution.

If I remember correctly he was only advertising 390 lumens for that light. I never really even believed that claim (they are nowhere near Nichica). He had a good write-up on the design of his lights and their progress and evolution on another website. These boards were his cheaper alternative to pre-made $20 clusters to give an idea of cost.

I know his site and post from the other forum. I am not trying to his design, however I would be using it for an underwater application, but his lights will not work for me. I contacted him to see if he could change the casing to fit the need of my boat, but he told me that the cases were molded and he couldn'y alter them (he used to cut and glue by hand). I don't know really anything about leds so there is no way I could assemble bulbs. I was hoping there was something already fabbed that I could put into the housing I needed for my application. The guy that makes these is a pretty nice guy from what I can tell, his claim is that his lights pull a lot less amps than the ones talked about from avnet. His lights looked really bright from the pictures on his site and the other forum. Any advise on anything premade and not bulky will certainly be taken into consideration. The guys site is coastal night light and the boating forum you were speaking of is called the hull truth. Thanks guy for the help and advise.
