If you do not mind the possible postal costs, here are a few websites offering battery adapters in common sizes - My preference is listed first as based on my current US address:

==================================

http://www.greenbatteries.com/battery-adapter.html

http://www.starbatteries.com/baad.html?gclid=CKya5rm7pIcCFRI8SAodwkpt5A

==================================

If you read Deutsch, here are a couple European websites:

http://www.swissbatteries.ch/default.asp?optCurrency=EUR=0&langext=0

http://www.amazon.de/dp/B000K6B6ES/

==================================

or conduct a search for "akku adapter" for other European sources. Even Sony makes an adapter. Most adapters start with an AA (Mignon) cell.

Thanks to you both for your replays

I think kaidomain carries some adapters like you're looking for, but you'll only get similar build quality and internal resistance to those cheap-light 3xAAA holders. Not that they won't work, but it makes them useless for high-current applications, which is the only thing NiMH AAs do better than normal (LiCo) Li-ions. Using the NiMH's high discharge rates requires either more expensive holders, or carefully modifying the cheap ones.

You consider D (or similar sized) Li-ions? Even 25500s (C-size) will have the same voltage, and more capacity than 3 NiMH AA cells. (4xAA holders do exist, and beat a 25500, but tend not to fit in most D-cell lights without quadboring, and a Li-ion D still has more energy.) While LiFePO4 or LiMn cells do have size/availability issues, I feel they make even make even the high-current benefit questionable enough I'll probably never build a high-count NiMH AA light.

it is to upgrade a 2D MAGLIGHT with a terralux 600lm drop in i think one of our friend from OZ has one on the go just thought it was worth a go as it will be less than half the cost of a fenix TK40 at the price they are on offer for in the UK at this time

what did you decide in the end as I am looking at some and not found many around when I was searching.
