The crazy guy next door
I have a $500 X990 going to waste in my garage because it has a broken lens. Acro, the US distributor, in their infinate stupidity, refuses to sell me a new one unless I send them the entire unit so THEY can replace it for me. That's $25 + shipping both ways + god knows how much for the lens. In 2010, I can buy an entire new HID light for that much, and I will, long, long before I ever send my X990 back to Acro.

Is there ANY source of X990 parts besides the jerks at Acro?! They've got to be out there somewhere...Acro doesn't make them...and they run a pretty crappy business model.

Not sure if this will help you any but i remember people saying that watchmakers could make a replacement lens as they have to make them for watches, i know not the answer you were looking for but it may be possible someone would do you one at a reasonable rate.

Also i would guess the lens adaptor is for attaching a IR lens over the top of the normal glass one.

I hope you find a decent solution as it sucks to have something not working because of needing a simple part.

I just got an email back from Magnalight and they said it is indeed the factory replacement lens. It's a "kit" because it comes with the bezel as well. $89.99 is a bit much, but at least I found one....

Is there anyone else that still deals in X990 parts besides brightguy and magnalight?

If anybody has a "parts" X990, I would LOVE to buy it from you!

Uggh. The ******** at Acro say the MSRP on that $90 "lens kit" is only $33.95, though they refuse to send me one for any reason. Meaning the actual cost is closer to $15.

Does anybody know of X990 vendors outside of the US, and therefore outside of Acro's ridiculous control on the market?

While we're talking about it, is the X990 bulb some sort of standard HID size or is it "special"? Bright guy wants $120 for a replacement, it can't possibly be worth that much in today's market.

Mine still works, but I figure if I'm rebuilding my battery packs, and replacing the lens, I might as well do the bulb too. It has enough hours on it to kill 3 NiMh packs.

The x990 is sort of an albatross for me. Mine dates back to the early days when it was McCulloch. Loved the light and even purchased two extra batteries (Acro by then). I guess I didn't used the light enough, for all four batteries are basically dead. Was thinking about having the battery packs rebuilt, but I thought I read somewhere that a lithium-ion battery was in the works, so...

Regarding a replacement lens, would CPF member flashlightlens be able to do something? I don't know if they would be able to do the rounded lens found on the x990, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I read that a few years ago too, still nothing in sight. With the price of HIDs coming down, and, new ones coming with lithium ion to begin with, I don't see it happening. Even Acro sells li-ion based HIDs now.

That said, I put a lot of thought into rebuilding my packs with lithium of various sorts. In the long run, the best I could ever come up with would be a ~6000mah lithium battery, at extremely high cost. Even though the NiMh packs are heavy, it's also part of the balance of the X990. With lithiums, I'm not sure it would stand on the battery pack with the head tilted. After much research I plan to rebuild my 4500mah packs with newer 5000mah NiMh cells.

I was thinking about a ~30Ah LiFe pack mounted in a backpack though...

I have a X990 with two dead battery packs too. If you guys find a good way to build a better pack that will work with the stock charger I'm in. Maybe we can get a better deal if we buy all the parts in a higher quantity together.
