i like both the Madmax and the Badboy. both will eat any bat you care to stick in it.
if i were to use mostly alkies, and did not mind the light gradually dimming, i would choose the madmax lite. it will use the bats down to nothing. or, you can feed it bats that are too drained to run other stuff--like digicam bats.
what is interesting is that i tried my BB400's with good alkies. they fell out of regulation at about 2 hrs.
with 2100 NIMH they fell out of regulation at around 2:40!
(this was with the stock low-dome. i have since changed them to lux3 high domes)
oh, and the madmax lite should still get good runtime, because i think the LED is only getting about 400ma.
the madmax plus runs at around 800ma! i gave one to a friend and he LOVES it! i tend to like longer runtimes, however.
i think that the rechargeables (as well as lithiums) will give a madmax a flatter discharge curve--but i havent tried it. but, since the madmax will grind the bats down to 0.8v, you have to be careful so you dont damage the rechargeables.
if you can save your pennies, i think the badboy/madmax would be worth it. add a mineral glass and a kroll clickie to round out the package.
if you really cannot afford the BB/MM, then the terralux or lambda's drop-in will still amaze you!
even my wife is floored when she picks up one of my lights, and expects a feeble ringy-yellow beam...and gets a wonderful bright white wall o' light.
oops...the inretech. it is a "direct drive" light, which means that the LED runs right off direct battery voltage. the nice thing is that there are no electronics, and runtime is crazy-long.
the bad thing is that they tend to be dimmer than a LED fed by a circuit. it will probably be even dimmer with NIMH, due to their lower voltage.
remember, most Luxeons like 3.5v and about 350ma, and the inretech will only provide 3v with alkies, and probably 2.4 to 2.8v with NIMH.
however, the inretech brightens up nicely if you use lithiums (which are often ~1.75v/cell, or 3.5v total).
holy cow, i have learned a LOT here at CPF!
