Does anyone know if it's possible to purchase a white laser pointer (instead of red or green) ? Is it even possible to make one ?

thanks,

sylvestor.

What you're asking for is technically impossible. And it will be technically impossible in the year 3001 as well; though by then they may be able to "fake it" by using ultra miniaturised red, green, and blue diode lasers and sophisticated optics to combine the beams into one.

By then, there will probably be some fairly stiff legal regulations in effect, and that fancy smacny synthetic white light laser pointer will probably output less than 1 milliwatt.

You can get a "white light laser" today, but they will be van-sized argon & krypton ion lasers, and a dishwasher-sized optical bench to split & recombine all the beams into one.

Prepare to have at least one 480VAC 3-phase circuit installed, and also call your favorite plumber to put in a high volume water supply & a drain that can take a good amount of hot water.

Hope they have a frieght elevator in your building too. That stuff will be a real pain to take up the steps otherwise. :O

it wasn't too long ago that computers were the size of rooms.

Laser technology is advancing far more slowly than computer or even LED technology.

We can never tell the future (there may be a spike in the advance of laser technology)

I think what Craig is eluding to is that lasers are "pure light". And white light is not pure.

So, like he said, the only feasible way to do it is to combine pure red, green, and blue beams. I guess if there is a market need, there will be research into a 3 beam "white" laser.

Until then, I guess we'll have to wait for some CPF'r to come up with one.
