White LED Driver offers inductorless power conversion.

Model SP6683 converts unregulated battery voltage from single cell Li-Ion, 2.7–5.5 V, to constant current output required by LEDs. At high input voltages it functions as linear regulator, and at low input voltages it functions as 1.5x charge pump, boosting input voltage to maintain desired LED forward current. Able to drive up to 8 white LEDs in parallel, product is suited for backlight color displays in portable applications.

Sipex Introduces Highly Efficient White LED Driver

(Milpitas, CA ) - Sipex Corporation (NASDAQ: SIPX), a leading provider of high-performance, analog integrated circuits (ICs), today announced the SP6683, a highly efficient charge pump that can generate regulated output current using two distinct operating modes. At high input voltages, it functions as a linear regulator. At low input voltages, it functions as a 1.5X charge pump, boosting input voltage to maintain desired LED forward current. This architecture enables greater efficiency, constant brightness and longer battery life. Designed for driving up to 8 white LEDs in parallel, this new product is ideal for backlight color displays in portable applications, such as cell phones and PDAs.

The SP6683 converts unregulated battery voltage from a single cell Li-Ion, 2.7V to 5.5V, to the constant current output required by light emitting LEDs. Since the part operates at high (1.2MHz) frequency, small external capacitors can be utilized, saving board space. The SP6683 offers an extremely low external component count, allowing the smallest possible circuit size and low cost implementation. The part is also ideal for driving high-power LEDs that are used as camera flash illumination in mobile phones and PDA’s.

SP6683 Key Features (typical)

• Inductorless power conversion

• 1x / 1.5x operation

• 1.2MHz switching frequency

• 1uF capacitors

• 300mA LED drive capability

• 300mV current sense reference with option for 150mV

• PWM dimming control

• Built in soft start

• Available now in thermally enhanced 10-pin DFN package

• Lead (Pb) free package option “-L”

Pricing & Availability

The SP6683 is currently available in the space saving DFN package with extended industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. Pricing for the SP6683 begins at $0.89 in 1,000 piece quantities. Product samples and an evaluation board are available to assist in the evaluation of the device.

Isnt this a Great news ?.... I have always been afraid of Inductors ...

Hi there,

Looks interesting. I would bet you need to drive with
3v input for the Luxeon 1 watter. Note the really good
eff's are with only 25ma output :-(

Take care,
Al

I would love to have something like this, but for a 2x123 configuration. I must be missing something - why are chips like this offered in 5.5 V max, instead of going up to 6.5 V to encompass both 1 and 2 x 123 configurations ?

Re: White LED Driver offers inductorless power con

the 5.5v sounds like it has a standard 5v reference in it. A lot of transistors and circuits are designed for 5v input and 5.5v is probably within *tolerance* for those components. It may be cheaper for them to use 5v tolerant components which are probably more common. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

Re: White LED Driver offers inductorless power con

These things are designed for LOW Currents. and for Coin Cells / Small Power Applications.
