i have read that sanyo 123's are better than energizer 123's. is this true? why is that? you would think that energizers would be as they are name brand and sanyo is more of an off brand.

please help!

Well ... If you read it on a web site, and you don't like it, just read another web site to get another opinion :D

Perhaps what you read may have been based on Silverfox's CR123 Shootout thread?

Oh, I don't think Sanyo is exactly an "off-brand", though it may be a brand name that you have had less exposure to than Energizer.

As large corporate manufacturers play 'musical jobs' via shifting factories from one place to another, and with different quality control from one factory to another, I wouldn't place much stock in CR123 performance claims that, no matter how detailed, are now up to 2 years out-of-date. There is also the OEM factor to consider, where a single factory/manufacturer may produce batches of batteries that are resold under differently-packaged brand names in many different regions of the world. As far as I know, it is almost impossible to keep track of just which battery was made in which time period by which company at which factory under which level of quality control. Even then, there can be production batches that are inadvertently below par from a factory that might previously have consistently produced top-notch batteries.

For my CR123 primary battery needs, I stick to Duracell, Sanyo, Energizer, Surefire, and Streamlight, preferably made in either the USA or Japan.

That said, I am seriously considering buying The ZTS Multi-Battery Tester so as to be able to test individual batteries prior to use. This becomes more important when using multiple batteries in series.

YUP!
but also if you look at things from the perspective of the Percentage of differance, you know better IF its worth worrying about.

go to toms hardware, and the latest 450$ video card is the "best" but add up the reality of the differance the 2-3% sometimes isnt worth tossing 250$ over.

its like the ring aound the cree, any good reviewer would identify its presence, but we can all feel free to ignore its significance.

a review may show that something is 2% better, to me that isnt what i care about, its the 40% worse, also its helps to know that things are relativly the same, so ya can forgedaboutit.

when they show that a li-poly battery has 23 more miliamps out of 1400ma total, it may show its "better" but it aint squat better. a "shootout" is still 100% usefull even if every battery in the shootout is exactally the same, its just great info/data.

Sanyo is one of the world larges maker of batteries and make batteries for other brands like Energizer.
There is some batch to batch variation, but both batteries should be good.

Edit: Sanyo is considered by many to be the best maker of Li-ions.

Sanyo currently isn't building CR123A batteries; their factory in China had a fire and the Japan factory was hit by an earthquake so current Sanyo Japan cells are rebranded Panasonic Japan batteries and pricing has gone up significantly.

Sanyo developed the CR123A battery so perceptions of them as an off-brand are simply incorrrect. Sanyo is one of the finest battery manufacturers in the world - they just don't spend a billion bucks a year on advertising as do Duracell and Energizer.

Panasonic, to my knowledge, is doing more OEM production than anyone else in the world - and they make a damn fine product (Streamlight and Surefire batteries are just the tip of the iceberg).
