Why aren't TI clips polished

I prefer the beadblasted clip, polishing it will certainly not increase it's value (might even decrease). A large majority of Ti buyers want it in it's original state, anyone out there can feel free to correct me if I am off base on this one.

light man,
In another thread I caught your comment about how the clips should have their edges radiused prior to bending. I receive the clips already bent for the most part and they have also been tumbled. I give them a quick bead blast to impart an initial uniform appearing surface to them but that is the extent of my cosmetic attention to them. They are added to the lights and indeed an integral part of the lights based on the utility they provide in terms of their function. The value in these lights that I place importance on is their longevity and utility in service in potentially less than friendly environments.

You can polish your light or its components to your hearts content. :) I have seen some examples here on the forum that I would be afraid to touch as I would no doubt leave a finger print.

In my opinion, these lights should be used and subject to encouters that will impart new marks and scratches in the surface finish. They are imperfect both cosmetically and geometrically when they leave my hands and I would expect them to develop additional character marks at the hands of the users. If your preference is in prettying yours up and showcasing it, that is your choice and you are certainly entitled to do so.

Because unless you are using the light for display, polishing is useless and time consuming. The blasted clip has a texture thus improving its unfinished look and contrasts with the light. I love polishing metal, but it hinders the usability of the part, and with all the fingerprints and scratches , it will look uglier in the long run.

...

It is what it is.

To be certain.

However the potential of what it can be is solely up to you kind sir.

Now if some of you will man the net, I know I am about to topple from this high horse! :nana:

I personally don't like polished clips & would rather have the bead blasted clip on my PD-Ss. However an alternative which I do like is the brushed/satin finish as I did pictured below. When my beadblasted clips get too scrached up I will finish them like this too:

Before (bead blasted on top, polished on bottom):

After (bead blasted on top, satin on bottom):

Over time your clips will be nicely polished just from wear. They will also be somewhat radiused. And of course just as a nice "patina" of wear starts to form, you'll drop your light on asphalt, by accident of course, putting a few gouges into the clip so the polish doesn't look so nice anymore... like I did.

I think its highly subjective as to what each individual prefers. There is no right or wrong.
I have polished some of my clips, left others bead-blasted and imparted a satin finish to the remaining ones and I like all of them equally.

The clips can be removed by unscrewing the screws with a hex wrench.
However its important to realise that its not that difficult to strip the head of the screw rendering it useless,
so care should be taken and only a good quality hex wrench should be employed.
Don has advised a Thorpe Hex wrench for this particular purpose. (I have forgotten the specific dimension)
AFAIK, spare clips and screws are available but you'd need to find out from others where to buy these from.

+1

The clip screws are tight ... maybe 9.9 on a scale that goes up to 10.0. But they are for sale at many suppliers (McMaster, etc.) so it isn't the end of the world if you kill one or two.

IMO, McGizmo Ti lights are about perfect (for a user light) just as they are. As much as I like to machine/polish/modify everything, my four McGizmo's have not been touched.

Use 'em hard. You cannot kill 'em:twothumbs

There is one source of natural (unbead blasted) clips and that comes on the Al Mules from McGizmo. I bought them awhile back and not sure if they still come that way. They are a lot easier to polish then the BB ones.

WOW Will, that is a killer 6 flute PD....:naughty:

The PD clips are the best clips I have encountered on a light. I do polish the edges as when new its a bit jagged (on Mule Ti PD). Other than that the bead blast finish compliments the light very well.
