Why Not a BETTER P60 Host?

P60 hosts and high power drop ins are great fun for guys like me with little or no mechanical skills or tools. There are dozens of great options out there to customize our P60 hosts. The trouble is we hear more and more that the P60 host is ill suited to draw heat away from the drop in. Copper tape and arctic silver can only do so much.

Would it be possible to fashion a P60 host with its own copper heat sink built in so that the d26 sized drop in slides right into a big copper slug? It might add an inch to the length of the flashlight but wouldn't it be worth it?

What does "Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk" add with such a long post? I'm pretty sick of seeing it. If I had a question or needed to clarify something I'd ask further questions anyway regardless of the method of your posting.

LOL. Yeah my head hurts when I am forced to read more than is necessary. I do not think he types that in. Rather I think it does it by itself as a form of advertisement.

It advertises Tapatalk. Same thing with emails from iPhones, or emails filtered by certain security packages.

Any time you create software involved in transmitting messages, you have a choice: just send what the user wants sent, or be a **** and grab yourself some free advertising. It says a lot about the company engaging in it, but I guess in a marketer's mind it's better to be known and loathed than to be unknown.

You mean like these? I guess the price is probably why we don't see more implementations.

I kind of figured my idea was ridiculous and impossible OR that it had already been done. I'm not that creative. Still...most of us use 18650's so if it works in his 26650 host I hope someone does it in a 18650 host.

When you consider the price of a Surefire C2 host with no heatsink and then add the cost to bore it that Fivemega host isn't as expensive as first glance would indicate. I had envisioned an even bigger solid copper heatsink at the end of the hollow heatsink before the battery tube but of course that would add even more to the cost. Still, Fivemega did sell those out right? I wish I bought one now...somehow I missed the heatsink component of his host.

With the popularity of triple and quad led's drawing more than 3 amps I would think that there would be a market for such a P60 host. I hope someone builds one or that Fivemega builds more.

The Tapatalk message is a signature the app automatically applies. I just removed the sig on the app. I'm on a laptop now.

Which can be edited, so can the iPhone signature. Both have the ability to be turned off.

Actually it's not cool at all. I thought there was more content but there wasn't, just spam, and you don't know the difference until you read it. Waste of time, every time. When it happens I take a quick look and yep it's the same guy every time. At least with sigs there is a visual divider line so you can train yourself to ignore it. However, there is no visual indicator to separate this spam sig from content.

It can be turned off, and should be.

All in good fun, I assure you. Point taken however.

I am a big fan of the P60 format, and love ANYTHING new that can expand upon and/or improve the "limited" opportunities that the form-factor offers.

I am a sucker for anything that can be crammed into a C2.

I know about the Cryos head. Are there any other designs that add a heat sink to the head?

I wasn't knocking a C2. I was just saying you were getting a lot for the money in the Fivemega build. There is a C2 next to me on the couch with a Thrunite XM-L drop in in it. My favorite flashlight in my profile is a C2 with a P91. The C2 was designed for incandescents so heat management wasn't as big an issue as it is now with LED's.

Anyway if there are other hosts with built in heatsinks I'm missing out so please fill me in!

Seriously though, copper tape is the best bet
for customized heatsinking on the many host/drop-in combinations,
its thin, and you only use a needed

This is correct.
They are not all the same.

IMO, the best current implementations for thermal management are the Malkoff modules with the Malkoff or Elzetta or VME hosts.
They are machined to an exact fit for the Malkoff modules, which already have brass heat sinks built right on to their modules.
So, the fit is excellent for the Malkoff modules.

Obviously, this doesn't help any other modules of different dimensions which may not fit in these hosts as perfectly, or even fit at all in some cases.
Luckily, the Malkoff modules are some of the best made, so these particluar hosts which are made to fit them perfectly make a great combination for thermal management, by design.


So, the options are either other drop-in module makers conform to the Malkoff hosts which provide a known fitment standard for their drop-in modules, or the makers will have to conform to some other makers standard size so they can get a tight fit, or else you need copper foil or paste or whatever.

That's where it stands presently, as far as I'm aware.
I have defaulted to the Malkoff drop-ins, and their compatible dedicated hosts of Malkoff and Elzetta and VME. I like the results, and I'm sticking with Malkoff stuff.

Even if a little copper foil is needed to connect to the copper slug it is the slug that adds the real heat sinking capability. All the copper tape does is allow heat to transfer to the aluminum head. If you read about maglight mods you'll see it is quite common to add a copper slug. I honestly don't think I'm beating a dead horse with this idea but I'm certainly taking a beating!

I'm not talking about heat sinking the drop in itself. I'm talking about adding a heat sink that any drop in can connect to. Please, before you tell me to go build it then I mentioned in the first post I have no such talent. It was just an idea.

Instead of adding a slug, what about a custom all copper P60 host built to spec of your particular drop in module with added heat sinking to suite taste? Also coated with some type of anti corrosion and protective finish. Im sure that highly skilled modders or manufacturers around here could pull the like of something like this off.
