Why not PM6 reflector for Mini-Mag?

I would image every CPFer has a Mini-Mag or two. I was wondering why hasn't someone made a head so that we can use the Mini-Mag (w/sandwich & Kroll of course) with the Pelican M6 reflector?

Gosh! It would look very different! The minimag has a rather slim body diameter. I wonder how it would hold up to a so much bigger head. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

IIRC, the threading on the head-end of the minimag tube is extremely difficult to match. Some sort of triple helix or something. Otherwise, I'm sure we would have seen alternate heads by now.

If you want a reflector in MiniMag, I would suggest modifying the stock reflector. It produces a nice beam IMHO.

Tyler is correct,

Mags have 4 start threads, kinda hard to make.
I have seriously thought about making heads JUST like you are describing. Turbo heads to hold PR reflectors.

But these would nto be easy at all to make. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

tylerduren,

I never thought of the threading issue. Based on the assumption that many (if not every) CPFers have invested in the LED (HD) conversion of Mini-Mag, I think a Mini-Mag-compatible head for PM6 reflector will be an cost effective upgrade in terms of both throw and brightness - maybe with adjustable focus to boot?

I agree. I modified mine to the point where the hotspot is a bit bigger than a PR and has wider sidespill. Of course in my comparison the MagAA is dimmer since it's not on the same power level as the McLuxPR.

Hey darkzero! That turned out great! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I think one of the reasons I've held off on doing anything with a Mini-Mag is that I'd prefer using a reflector to using an optic.

I am on the waiting list for one of the orange peel cammed custom reflectors for my Mag 3D.

Very nice job with your MM reflector, very bright, smooth and useful spot it projects.

darkzero, how does your minimag reflector compare with NX05 or Fraen LP? Dimmer but broader? ?

I did the same thing.
Turned out rather nice.
You get a good amount a throw from it, but still have a wide flood.
Oh, mine was with a LD though.

Why not turn down the minimag head into something that is thread friendly for the PM6 head to screw in? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Since the AA body is slimmer than the PM6 body, I believe a normal minimag head, turned down to just before the threads, can be threaded to fit any type of PR head. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Isaac,

The modified MM reflector will produce a brighter hotspot than NX05 and FLP, but less brighter than PR.

My MM (BB917/TW0K) records nearly 1000 lux at 1 meter with NX05, 1300 lux with FLP, 1500 lux with the modified MM reflector. With PR, it will record over 2000 lux (the size DOES matter /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif).

wow, BB917! I thought they only made DB's in currents greater than 700! near full amp draw from NiMH! Interesting! BB917 + 2C nexstar and reflector/30mm optics would be pretty awesome with a luxIII! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wonder why more people don't use the MM reflector then? I'm guessing since it's more work than ploping an optic in..

2C batts can obly power up to about a bb800.
I think it will lightup, it just wont be in regulation.

But, BB's can be made up to ~1000mA Probably alitttle higher.

Well, you could use NiMH 4500 C's too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif That should do it right? Can a ~BB750 be used with 2 alk batts like D's to power up a 5 watter or would it be too low of Vi? 3C's then?

Sorry to go off topic :|

i've had this idea for a while now.

several months ago i made a mockup of one, just pressfit together, and have been planning to make a better one ever sence.
as it goes, i've been held back by gear problems with the lathe, time problems, etc.
as soon as my current workload clears up this is on the top of my to-do list.

the mag threading is an issue, but it's possible to machine a normal mag head down and pressfit it tightly inside a new piece...you wouln't even be able to tell /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
