I am picturing families of lights. Many out here are already swapping heads and bodies. Something seems lacking.
Lets say that you have a favorite head body combination for a specific task but Improvements in LED's and Boards....or sandwichs make you want another light. The body and head may be perfect for you but you want the different board or LED. Why not be able to change what does not suit you and move them to another light that is not used as much.
Families of lights.
Full Sized that could range from Single D cell to 6 D cell and AA Adapters. By picking the right board Led combo. You could have A cheap to run and bright but not portable 6 D cell monster. With the same Led board combo, switch to a more compact 6 AA pack. Sometimes bright is not what you need but only a moderate amount of light. 2 D cells with the right board LED combo could be really Cheap to run. Maybe a Stubby Single D will meet your needs for a Dimmer Cheap to run combo or the single D body could give you A short stubby 3AA combo.
Combact Family:
Sub Compact Family:
Micro Class: The Micro Class could be a firefly class of light. By selecting the right sandwich or micropuck depending on design, you could build a Single AA light that is either has a long life or is realativly bright for its size. Or you could have a single 123 body or a slender 2 AA body. Or the Super firefly...2 or 3 123's. Just match up the right sandwich for the head body combination you choose.
I am not thinking of these things being a in the field swap but at home with a few simple tools.
Advantages. As boards and LED's improves, your favorite body does not become obsolete. The old Sandwich, board or Led can be moved to another light, perhaps a beater that goes in the tackle box.
You might have gone for the brightest light that you could get in a certain size class...but you find that it is bright than you need and you eat batteries heavily. Dont give you your perfect body and head, change out the components.
