Why so few smooth reflectors?

It's true there are still smooth reflectors in dedicated throwers, but besides that, I haven't found many. Fenix used to have smooth reflectors as an option in some of their lights (like L2D), but with the new LD20, not an option.

A few questions then:

If lights like the D10/EX10 or Liteflux Lf3xt had smooth reflectors, how much of an increase in throw would you guess would occur? Enough to notice? I ask because I'm interested in these lights (don't have any lights with a low low), but I also would like if they had more throw. Light-reviews has the D10 at 1630 lux and the Liteflux at 2980 (not on li-ions, as I don't have batteries or a charger). I'm probably expecting too much throw out of lights with small heads and reflectors, and I realize they perform a little better with li-ions, but if you consider how much a good charger and AW batteries cost, you're looking at another $75 or so.

As for OP reflectors, aside from white-wall hunting, are they really better in for real-life use? Although I have a definite interest in lights, I don't use them that much, so I don't know myself, but it seems to me that smooth reflectors would be more practical: more throw when you need it, and still plenty of useful spill. Enlighten me:candle:

P.S. I'm leaving for Honduras for a week and a half soon. So far I'm planning on taking: Fenix PD20/L1D (not bringing L2D body, as it doesn't work on low with lithiums), Fenix E01, Jetbeam MKIIx, Romixen RC-G2, cheapy Husky 1AA, and maybe a cheap penlight; that's actually most of my good light (and yes, I kind of consider my minimag LED and husky 4 watt as "good lights"). I don't plan on needing this many, but doubtless I'll be the only person out of 20 in our group bringing any.

Any frequent traveller tips on light or non-light items to bring to a 3rd world country? A marine friend recommended not wearing deoderant, as that attracts bugs; I think that might also attract dirty looks from the people that have to hang around me in the hot sun w/out any:green: I'm also curious if I can bring a small multi-tool into the country w/out getting arrested.

In actual real world use of true EDC lights, flood is more useful than throw 9 times out of 10, hence the textured reflector. It's better suited for everyday people doing everyday tasks, which means illuminating things within arms reach.

And then there are people who want to squeeze every extra drop of lux out of a light so they can impress people better and look how far it throws and go "ohh, wow....".

A smooth reflector has the same flood area as OP, just with dimmer spill, right? I'm guessing rings and such don't matter much in actual use.

It depends on the reflector, but in general the spill is brighter, and the hotspot is larger and less well defined with textured. For the most part, it gives a more usable beam.

It doesn't seem that long ago that everyone was scrambling around looking for OP reflectors and smooth was the 'norm'.

I like smooth reflectors more, I find it more useable, that's just me.
I bought a jetbeam 2 ibs for the throw, to bad it came with OP reflector...

P.S. You are going outdoors right? You might want to look into the fenix TK20, it is great for outdoors with it's incan kinda light which is better for outdoors. Also has good throw.

The OP on your PD20 is so minimal it's allmost smooth - no rings - decent spill - one of top throwers in 1X123 format. I would say that Fenix has arrived at a workable compromise between OP and smooth,

Walter
