What is the point to using theses batteries? Could someone explain the benefit to me? Thanks...

Greater output then a regular AA. Heres a graf of the LF5XT:

You can se the complete review here: http://light-reviews.com/liteflux_lf5xt/review.html

There are big differences between regular AA cells and 14500 Li-Ions - rechargeability, different voltages...

I'll move this into the Batteries section, where you will find plenty of information.

Most lights which are designed to use it have the added flexibility of then being able to use just about every different chemistry of battery there is. You can use Li-Ion (14500's), or NiMH, among MANY others.

Lights that can run on 14500s offer either greater output than when running on NiMH, better runtimes or (in the case of multi-level lights) both.
