Wide angle optics for XP-G

I want to replace a few GU-10 lights with LEDs, so I am looking for a wider angle optics: at least 45 deg I reckon but wider is better. I can find stuff for XR-E but not XP-G.

There is stuff on DX that people say "should be OK" but often you end up with blotchy beams and such if you try to substitute optics. Cutter has some XP-G specific ones, but they are narrow (Fraen ones I don't know the angles, just a weird string of numbers:sigh: and rather expensive when you start looking at 20 or so)

I found some in LedSupply, but the widest Carclo one is 41Deg. I suppose that would do, but if I want to buy just one for test purposes, the freight is a killer.

So. Is there a wider optic? I guess also, do I really need 45deg+? These are to replace two triple light ceiling strips that had GU-10 fluoro lights that have blown. I am aiming at using 2-3 XP-G LEDS in each light.

Appreciate any help.

I was under the impression that ANY XP-E optic will work. But, the smaller XPG LED is more floody with the XP-E optics. So, the angle representation isn't too accurate.

It'll be trial and error as this site is mostly for the most lumens in a spot a mile away.

I myself would like to see more 'floody' lights/optics for normal indoor usage.

I think your best bet is to grab some of the XLamp optics available from cutter and test them yourself with the XPG. You might find that the 'angle' representation isn't too accurate.

Thanks for the reply and I think you are right. trouble is that with freight, you end up buying several just to justify things and end up with heaps of wasted/obsolete bits lying around. It doesn't break the bank, but it feels a but daft sometimes.

Digikey has quite a good assortment of LED reflectors. The prices are OK. And if you mail them an order with a check, no S&H, no minimum order!

But although they have Bridgelux and many Cree, they only have one XP-G in stock right now, and it is rated at 10 degrees beam width.

I've purchased reflectors from Acecorp- www.acetroncorp.com - and shipping was respectable but not outrageous. They were the cheapest I found on reflectors too, and they carry a wide variety.

Todd was my contact there- don't know if he still is there or not.

Good luck- if you find a good solid flood one let me know please!

I've tested XP-E optics on XP-G's and the difference is very minimal. Try Ledil optics. the Strada Series optics as they are for wide area illumination. Actually they are for Type 5 short streetlights but they are very wide and work extremely well as a flood optic.

I think you can order them through Digikey, and maybe Mouser. Future Electronics and Arrow Electronics also carry them.
