Would this be a good upgrade?

Ok since finding your forum I've been doing a lot of looking and reading. I just recently bought a Duracell Daylite AA flashlight and I'm very impressed with it compared to what I was used to (4D maglite and mini maglite)

I just bought a Fenix E01 for work and I'm thinking about getting a Romisen RC-G2 II Q5 from shining beam as a car/house light. It's either that or the Romisen RC-N3 Q5, but I'd be running it on AA not CR123. Does it perform as well on AA? or should I stick with the G2 on single AA?

I was planning on getting a pack of Sanyo Eneloops to power the Duracel/Romison and it also comes with AAA for the Fenix E01.

Just wanted to know if this seemed like a good way for me to step up to some nicer lights than the crap I've been using.

Thanks.

How do you use/ see yourself using these lights? I'm not a mag hater like some folks here, but my mags almost never get used...

Do you use your 4D mag more on the throw or spill settings?

What are your hobbies/ interests? Camping? Night hikes? Astronomy? Caving?

Do you walk dogs at night?

How often do you/ will you use your lights?

Is your budget flexible? What's the max you want to spend?

Answering these will help us, help you...

I use the 4D on throw
I live out in the country and power outages are not uncommon, so wanted some good inside/out lights incase of power outages
Not wanting to spend more than about $30/light.
Don't walk dogs at night. I got the E01 for work and went ahead and picked up a RC-G2 II Q5, but still need one more good light for around the house.

I have a G2 Q5 from shiningbeam, it's a nice light for the money but the runtime is ~1hour. Much shorter runtime than I would want for a power outage... For your budget, I'd take a serious look at the AKORAY. I don't have one, but I hear good things. I believe it's a programmable multi level. Reportedly of good quality.

Something to think about. You'll likely get curious enough to drop ~$50 on a Fenix or Nitecore or 4sevens light or the like sooner or later. My advice is, save yourself some money and buy the higher end light now. I wish I had done this instead of going through several junk DX/ KD lights and then spending allot more anyhow!!

There're many lights brighter than you mag, but not many that will throw as well FYI... A decent thrower and one tough light is the Fenix TK20. Takes 2AAs 11 hrs @45 lumens or ~2 @150 lumens, a nice warm tint to boot... Check out 4sevens.com. Great folks that have their finger on the pulse of the flashaholic community. The Quark AA is a great and versatile light. I own both of the above lights (and a couple dozen others) and if I lost either one I would not hesitate to buy them again... Another favorite is the nitecore D10... There's a coupon code for 4sevens, can't think of it at the moment though. They have a great reputation, free shipping and a lifetime warranty come with all of the above lights from them...

Let us know what you do...

Well I just bought a Fenix E01 for work, small and rugged.
Also bought a Romisen G2 Q5 today.
Going to use Eneloop for them, just bought a powerpack off ebay w/ 8 AA and 2AAA

My 4D thinking about the Malkoff, or take that money towards a TK20. not sure yet

I went with the RC-N3 II Q5 cos it had 2 modes, could be a 1xCR123 ( i have loads of RCR123s lying around) or use the extension tube and have it become a 2xAA light with 2 modes

Investing in the Malkoff for a light you called crap in an earlier post will just make it a crap light with an expensive modification. Go for the TK20 instead.

Hmm I was looking at the Malkoff because someone suggested to me that it would turn the 4D into a much better light. Dunno I do like the TK20 though

Why not take a peak at the EagleTac 100 series? Great throw which you like, great run time, very bright, great value, great warranty, great CPF vendor(PTS), seams to be durable so far, great regulation. I think they are $39 plus a CPF discount code.

WELCOME TO CPF! I hope you don't think your done with this puchase.

Dereelight DBS and Tiablo are also good throwers, but even the Mag with the Malkoff is quickly going well above the $30 you originally intended to spend. EagleTac might be the best suggestion yet.

This week I went ahead and bought a Fenix E01, and a Romisen RC-G2 II Q5 from shiningbeam.com (Couldn't resist, you guys are having an effect on me)

Still looking for a thrower for my backyard though. Either a Malkoff for my 4d Mag or a new LED light. After the thrower I might be looking for another AA light (ordered a set of eneloop AA w/ charger) have to wait and see.

good choices, head out when its dark and test the E01 in pitch blackness, you're going to be very surprised at its output. what's the budget like for your thrower? I'm thinking one of the newer lights out there might be just nice for your backyard.

Olight M30, TK40 and the other similar lights Eagletac M2 series, Jetbeam M1X etc

I have most of the budget lights mentioned in this thread. RC-G2 II, RC-N3, AKOray K-106. For a budget thrower, don't rule out the Solarforce L2. Can be had for around $25.00. It runs on 123 primaries or rechargables. I would go ahead and order a couple of RCR123's and a charger. That RC-N3 on a RCR123 is pretty dang bright.

that is a good thing to hear especially since i have an Akoray K-106 on order and an RC-N3 II on the way :D

The RC-G2 is an amazing light (at least to me anyways) it's very bright, very focused. Almost too bright for inside use actually. Anyone have an idea on runtime with an eneloop AA in it?

Agree - Adding a better light could be a smart move.
Of course, sticking around here can lead to other needful things, so careful in the candy store ;)

Which higher end lights are you referring to? I wouldn't mind spending more money but I want it to be a good value.
