I want to buy some bright 5mm led's that I can simply plug into the bulb socket on some 2xaa minimags that I have. Does such a thing exist even?

Blue or white LEDs are generally 3V and up -- other colors (red, orange, etc.) might work out, though. I assume "2.?" is for NiMH, but if you don't mind investing in another chemistry, there's some NiZn batteries with 1.6 to 1.8V working voltage -- they could work nicely for a white LED.
