Besides the H50-Q5 being somewhat brighter than the P4 model, what's the major differences between these two? Is the Q5 perceivably that much brighter? I like the $39.00 price of the P4. :)

I have bought 1 Q5 and 3 P4. my experience was a slight difference in brightness, but not enough to spend the extra money. there was a slightly warmer tint on the Q5 than the P4s, which i prefer. but again, not enough to spend the extra cash. great light btw.

Thanks for your honest opinion Pumaman. I'm not of the persuasion that brighter is always better.

My problem is that when I rationalize it, I always tell myself that it's not only brighter, it's more efficient. :D (ie it can produce the same amount of light using less energy and should be able to have better battery life as a result).

Is either one better with alkalines or lithium (non rechargeable)? I'm sure once I buy a good AA light, I'll get sucked in but right now I'm not using any AA lights (Nimh, li-ion, etc).

I think both draw the same amount of juice per the 3 levels of brightness. On low mode plain 'ole alkalines will be able to handle the low power demand nicely and runtimes should be very good. Not sure about medium, but high is out of the question - with alkaline in this mode it'll only be a small chunk of runtime compared to Nimh/Lithium etc.

Might be a good time to stock on lithium primaries or an Eneloop kit.
