I'd be interested to hear anyone's experience with this, as I'm contemplating a particular application.

The ones I have do not fit in my L2 (I think the same dimensions as the L1 tube) but do fit in the E1L. HTH

I know the ones I have will not fit either L1 nor L2, others have stated the same, and have wondered if that is deliberate - does that have to do with the two-stage brightness and dumb heads, or something like that? Otherwise why would some Surefires accomodate them and not others? They won't fit in any of the Inovas I have also.

Are RCR123's made slightly larger and some battery tubes made slightly smaller to make sure nobody does a no-no?

You cannot use a Li-ion in the L1. This may be why it doesn't
fit. You can use Li-ion in the E1L because it's KL1 head can
accomodate up to 6+ volts, the L1's internal regulator is made for 3.
Since Li-on cells can initially be over 4 and run at 3.6 they cannot be used
in the L1.
