I was thinking that there was possibly enough space in a Maglite tail cap under the spring to insert a voltage/current regulator. It seems like it is impossible to get the most out the LEDs (and batteries) without one. My 19 LED degrades fairly quickly, and while you could argue that they are more efficient when underpowered, that means little when you just need raw power. When I crammed 4 nicad c cells into the 3 D body the 19 LED light was spectacular, but quickly got too hot. I could either try better heatsinking methods or adjust the voltage to keep it just on this side of safety. Is this idea even feasable? Can the circuit use the body as a shared ground?
