OK, I used to use my Petzl Zoom for backpacking, but frankly I haven't used it at all for that since I got my Tikka. As a result, I now have a 4.5 volt (3AA or 1 MN1203) test bed.
I've read the Petzl Zoom is the most common headlamp in the world, so I was amazed to find so few search results here.
Please share your ideas for modifying this headlamp. Here are my own ideas:
1. Drop in a $34.95 LEDCorp Pro Series LED Bulb. That has a PR base. The Zoom has a screw base, but based on some experimentation with a PR bulb, I think I can easily modify the Zoom to make the LEDCorp bulb fit. This would be easiest.
2. Adapt Lambda's "Beamer" 3D Cell Luxeon-Maglite mod for the Zoom. This would entail ripping out the existing bulb-holder/switch and replacing it with a heatsink and a button to position the LS correctly in the Zoom.
3. Include regulation and possibly pulse technology to balance intensity and burn time.
