Electronics company Sanyo has a similar nickel-metal hydride rechargeable called the Eneloop on sale at Circuit City, Ritz Camera and other chains, said David Isola, a Sanyo senior product manager.
He said the company has sold 10 million worldwide in the 10 months they've been on sale. The batteries, which also are fully charged out of the box, can hold their power for up to two years when they're not being used, Sanyo said.

Why would rayovac make batteries only available at walmart?

Only availble at Walmart? Rayovac is in bed with Walmart, and honestly that's not a bad place to be. Typical Joe Sixpack who shops at Walmart is typically into good pricing, not high quality, high-end products. It's deals like this that keep companies alive when they really don't have any stunning products to keep them afloat.

The problem is the average wal mart shopper looks at price and not anything else. Thats why you end up paying slightly less for much less product there were you could buy the same item in a larger package somewhere decent and actually spend less. So the average walmart shopper is going to see that these rechargeable batteries cost more than a regular battery and pass them up.
Then someone who doesn't shop at walmart doesn't get to try any of the new batteries.

Because Walmart is their biggest customer, and what Walmart wants, Walmart gets. Initial launch of a product is something stores will push to get. Sooner or later you'll be able to find them in other stores, after Walmart's exclusive distribution period ends.
