I like the RR headlamp for it's size, 2 levels, and 2xAAA configuration.
But it's too throwy and not floody enough to make a great headlamp. Yesterday I decided to go for a seriously low tech approach at diffusing the beam, and here it is. I just cut the bottom off of a 1oz. medicine cup, made 2 holes, threaded one with a bead chain, and the other with a rubber band. I wanted a way to keep the cap attached so it could be taken on and off on the fly when I needed to diffuse the beam, and this was the best my little pea brain could come up with so far. The rubber band side keeps it snug on the bezel, the beadchain makes sure it's loose enough to come off and hang below the bezel when not in use. Not a Surefire flip system, but it does work. The beamshots did NOT turn out at all, but I can say that on High with the cover on, it floods out nicely without loosing too much light.
It acheives the effect I was after, a floody beam to use around the campfire where there's lots of wood, utensils, legs, etc laying around to trip over.
I'll take this with me on my next trip and see how useful it ends up.
