Got this flashlight for 19.99 at Microcenter. How can I found out if this is a Cree LED or a Luxeon LED?

I have not opened it yet, 'cause I want to know more about the LED. I think it would be better for anyone to buy one expensive great light than buy multiple cheap poor lights.

thanks,

I think most of those dorcy's use the K2. Probably not a bad light but since you mention "one expensive great light" then you should look into something like the Fenix L1T or L1D. They use the latest and greatest LED's. Use the search feature on this forum. Someone here has probably reviewed the dorcy.

The 2xAA version of that light used to use a domed version of the Nichia Rigel, but I don't know if they've upgraded it since. The optic is not efficient at all, it's just a normal magnifying lens. All the light from the led that is emitted to the sides is lost.

I have the 3AAA version and its nothing to get too excited over. I am not a big fan of focusing optics that just move the aspheric in and out of focal length. IMHO the design wastes a lot of side emitted lumens, that are trapped inside the bezel.

IMHO a better 1AA light in that price range is the Energizer 1AA at Target.

I think it's the Luxeon I that they use in several of their "45 lumen" lights. Some have a focusing optic, which is generally disliked, as it reduces output without significantly increasing throw. I got a couple of the 1AAA for $13.99 each because they're small and have a momentary forward clickie instead of a twisty. I was looking for 1AAA gifts that would be brighter than a Nichia LED, but cheaper than the Fenix L0D and still useful for non-flashaholics.

Is this the one you have?

Dorcy Direct is a good source if they have a light you want. They also sell a Luxeon 1W PR2 dropin for $10 (http://www.dorcydirect.com/p-86-41-1642-15-v-8-volt-1-watt-led-module.aspx) - these work best in flashlights with a textured reflector, but they're still a big improvement in most any 2D flashlight.

All the LED models have free shipping, but they've dramatically increased the number necessary to qualify for the quantity discounts. It's fair to say that a lot of folks on CPF wonder why Dorcy didn't just upgrade to the newer Nichia LEDs in their famous $5.94 1AAA (Walmart price), and skip the stupid optic. They'd still be selling tons of them.

EricTarini: Yes, that is the one that I have.

kramer5150: I will try to see if the local target here does stock the energizer 1AA.

As Fenix has been recommended and since it seems a good choice, where can I buy the LD20? 4Sevens only offers the older L2D CE.

thanks,
