Powering notebook with car battery

Is there anyway to run MSI Wind netbook using 12 volt car battery (externally)? Using inverter too costly and wasting much power. One guy told me to trigger it with 20 volt dc (to fool the circuitry as if it's running on AC power supply) in split second switch it to run on 12 volt dc, is it possible ?

I believe there are DC to DC converters available as third party hardware that can convert standard automotive voltage to whatever your laptop specifies.

I think Targus has some peripherals like that, but I dunno for sure.

One thing for sure though, running a battery on an inverter is way too costly, both in investment and efficiency.

An inverter starts at around $25. How much are you willing to spend to get this other scheme to work?

Modified sine yes....but how long will a laptop last on modified sine I have no idea. In a modified sine wave, the voltage rises and falls abruptly, the phase angle also changes abruptly and it sits at 0 Volts for some time before changing its polarity...so as far as the laptop's AC adapter is concerned...those abrupt changes register as higher heat output, and occasional whine.

I run pure sine for mine, a small Samlex 150W, around $100

I use a Targus 70 watt Auto/Air adapter to run my HP notebook off a 12 volt battery (which I keep trickle-charged with a 15 watt solar array)

From Targus' site, Tip #3 on the 70 watt adapter should be the one that fits a MSI Wind U100. If you have the U120, you'll need to get the 90 watt adapter and use Tip S-5
