Its another one of these 'what would you recommend' but forgive me as I have not been able to spend to much time in the flashohlic world!

I need advice for a powerful led torch for my farther in-law.

Requirement is

Simple
No crazy specialist batteries (cr123's would be ok)
Good throw and spill
Not Surefire price, but not DX quality!

Any ideas?

How husky is your father in law?
MagLED 3D
May not be the brightest, but properly focussed can give lots of throw.

For something smaller look at the simple Fenix 2AA lights.
Single mode Fenix E20
2 mode Fenix L2T v2.0

1AA 2 mode Fenix L1T v2.0

1AAA 3 mode Fenix Digital LD01

And if you need brute force power 8AA Fenix TK40 though the UI is getting complicated.
A single mode Elektrolumens Mag with MCE LED(s) might be a better choice.

The first light I would recommend would be the Fenix TK20, but because you can accept CR123 batteries, the Fenix TA21 is also a good candidate. Both a very easy to use and has multiple leves, TK20 two and TA21 many more controlled with a ring. I.e. bot a very easy to use.

You can see the light from them here, together with a lot of other lights.

I'd recommend a RC-N3 Warm white from shiningbeam. Good quality for the price, relatively cheap, neutral white, forward clickie, and simple.

You can make a direct drive MC-E or P7 mod for a maglite pretty easily.

Not exactly, but there is an SSC P7 option for M@glite. There's also a new Cree XP-G setup for a M@glite. Both are from malkoffdevices.com and they are hands down the best modification you can get for a M@g without getting a custom build.

However there are tons of other options depending on size, battery type, user interface and mode options, etc.
