Hi!

Checking Dereelight web page, and it looks that XR-E R2 is no more available.

I assumed (after digging the CPF, of course), that XP-G R5 will not have as much throw as R2, so I have contacted Dereelight.

Here is a beam shot comparison (as received from Dereelight):

beam_xpg.jpg

As expected, R2 looks like a winner in throw comparison.

Now, considering that they already have MCE pill for flood, I wonder why they have choosen to go with XP-G for throw:thinking:

Anyone already having XP-G version of DBS?

My R4 drop-in throws as far as my E2DL. It just lights up a much bigger area.

I'll put my money down that the R5 DBS is going to throw as far as the R2, it will just give a bigger hot spot. Which makes me want one because I hated how hard core throwers had tiny hot spots.

I dont think the R2 hotspot is brighter than the R5 base on that pic. Try reducing the image brightness.

That is what flashlightconnection also claims...
Sounds too good to be true :naughty:

If you design a reflector for a new emitter, it'll be a great light if you know, what you're doing!

As for the throw however, I'm not sure that the XP-G will really be equal or better than the R2. I'm no specialist of those things, but I followed a few discussions about emitting surface and surface brightness. Someone claimed that the XP-G, even if brighter than the XP-E, can't throw better because the emitting surface is bigger and the surface brightness lower. As I said, I only repeat here what I read, I can't explain.

Though, I'm sure the new DBS is a better light overall Even if it lacks some throw, it'll have more than enough and the hotspot is bigger, it'll be a more universal light. on't get me wrong, I expect a thrower, but my Cl1H with the aspherical head throws also better than the DBS-R2, but its beam is awfull and there is no universality at all!

I read that (huge) thread also ;-)

I was looking on DBS as better thrower then Tiablo A9 (I am aware that A10 throws better, but it is bulkier).

Now, with XP-G, I am not sure if DBS will throw better than A9??

Very interesting discussion here!

I been looking for a good throw light and have considered the above options. I think I will wait until someone can give a straight answer or maybe do a comparison.

A topic near and dear to my heart, as is this brand.

I don't know about anyone else but Dereelight is the only brand of light that has never let me down as far as tint goes. Every other manufacturer of lights has shipped me a light loaded with a green or blue and even (gasp) a violet one! This has happened with three different manufacturers who will remain nameless, unless someone asks for them! :D

Just from this pic, I can tell that Cree is shipping emitters that are green to Dereelight. They must have included a note to one of those other companies because it seems like the only R5 I have with a low enough voltage to run off of AA's is squid green, worst tint yet! The shot on the right looks the same to my eyes and I'd hate to own a Dereelight with that tint.

Oh yeah, Henk_Lu, I'll bet my DBS with an aspheric can out throw your CL1H with an aspheric!:crazy::naughty::twothumbs:rolleyes:

My gut reaction to a switch is: Why when you have the best thrower on the market (not counting the DEFT), you'd want to go "upgrading" the emitters for no increase in throw (or even a slight loss) and worse tints? I know the answer and its all just a part of the business, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. :p

I assume the 5A/B pills will still be available, and I'm a warm tint guy, but I have a R2 WH and think its damn near perfect. In fact I'd like a few more for different battery configs/number of modes, but I'm afraid they are gone forever. In my opinion Dereelight would be best off to add the XP-G to their lineup rather than replace anything. The more choices, the better. :)

Well, it seems that both XR-E reflectors and pills are available from Dereelight so you may still have a chance.

I am considering getting the XP-G R5 1SM-2 and the 18500 extension.

As far as battery combinations for both output, if different and run time what would be best?

2 18500
3 RCR123
1 18650

I've been waiting for them to come into stock to find they changed the emitter. I'll wait until someone post a review or beamshot. To play it safe, I think I'm going to go with the rrt-1 for now though..... Unless someone has some insight on them? Got the m20 r2 with the smo. It's a good thrower, just want more!:naughty:

I have the RRT-1 and it out throws the DBS unless I put the aspheric head on the DBS.

Thats exactly what i was looking for! Someone who had both. So Which one would you buy after owning both? Given quality, feel, finish, ect...? I ordered the rrt-1. Hoping there will be alot more throw than my m20 smo. Was going to do the dereelight, except for the change in emitters.

Heater, out of the M20, RRT-1, and DBS, I only own the DBS (3 of them) so please take my opinion for what it's worth. You'd be doing yourself a disservice not keeping in mind that the DBS is a modular light that may come out with newer pills.

357mag1, what pill do you have on your DBS? I have an R2 (Q5) on it and it looks a lot cooler than beamshots I've seen while being compared to the Jetbeam and I was right, those beamshots are of a DBS with a Q2-5A. That's less brightness so I can't really compare.

I know the Olight isn't modular and I assume the Jetbeam isn't either. I'll be waiting for the newer reflector and pill to make the most use out of the R5 and/or ST90 pills (which haven't been announced, I'm just conjecturing!).

I do agree with the color tint in the pics. I have a tk20 that has the warmer tint LED that rocks outdoors for camping and such. It throws as good as an ultrafire q5 I have, if not better (matter of opinion). I would like to stay towards the warmer side, and contacted deree on the color bin. A 1C as I'm told, slightly cooler than the R2 WH. Again thats what I was told. That what helped sway my decision, liking the warmer tints. If they do come out with a different reflector, or pill down the road, I will buy it. My wife keeps telling me "You'll need a good light to find a good place to live if I keep this up!" CPF made me an addict! I will end up buying the DBS, but just want the flat out most throw I can for now with out divorce!

That pic isn't accurate... cameras can sometimes make tints appear different from real life, especially if the pic was taken without manual adjustments to the camera's settings. Alan at Dereelight has self-proclaimed that he has difficulty taking pictures. :) Sorry Alan for saying that! :D  I have a thread started in the Dealer's section, (CLICK HERE) you can see more pics there. :grin2:

2 18500
3 RCR123
1 18650

The 18650 will give the longest runtime, about 3.5 hours, but will not be regulated... it will start out at full brightness but will gradually lose brightness as the battery's voltage decreases. When using two or more batteries, it will be fully regulated. The 1S version is the one to use for fully-regulated 18650 operation.

2 x 18500's will give about 2.2 hours on high, 3 x RCR123's will give about 1.2 hours. Brightness is the same, only the runtime changes.
