I was considering getting the 1AA spare body and throwing a 14500 in it. Would the runtime be any better or worse than just staying with 2 AA eneloops?

It would be worse. The two Eneloops would have the same brightness as the single 14500 but with longer runtime. If you want the 1AA body, just buy that light first and add the 2AA body if needed later. If you have Eneloops now, then just get the 2AA and save some money as you won't need the 14500 LiIon or charger.
:)
Are you looking at the regular or tactical version? The tactical has a momentary switch as well as two settings that can be programmed to any of the available light modes, so if you won't need several modes, the tactical keeps things simpler. But the tradeoff is the tactical switch protrudes so you can't tail-stand the light.
