Why are the XP-G pads on the bottom?

Does anyone have an explanation for why the CREE XP series have the pads on the back side of the LED (same side as the heatsink pad)? Is it cheaper to manufacture this way? Is this a trend that will continue?

I think the main reason would be to get it this small.

XPs aren't the only ones. All the Cree XR series LEDs have had the pads on the bottom for reflow soldering. Luxeon, Edison, Nichia, LEDEngin, and Osram also have LEDs that have the pads on the bottom. This is not uncommon at all.

The XP's have pads on the top too, to allow for manual soldering; they're just really frickin' small.

Those small pads on top in spite of their visibility are covered with some transparent insulator.

Why are the XP-G pads on the bottom?
